Red yeast rice (Monascus purpureus) supplements: Case series assessment of spontaneously reported cases to The Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb

Misha F. Vrolijk et al.

Summary: The study analyzed cases received by Lareb on red yeast rice (RYR)-related adverse health events and found that most reported adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, and general disorders and administration site conditions. This highlights the importance of considering RYR supplements as a significant safety concern and the need for more research to fully assess their safety profile.

Current status of the spontaneous reporting and classification/coding system for herbal and traditional medicine in pharmacovigilance

Mikyung Kim et al.

Summary: The use of herbal and traditional medicine is widespread globally, but the management of such medicines in pharmacovigilance systems requires further investigation. There is limited information on the use of classification/coding systems within databases built on spontaneous reporting systems to detect signals for certain drugs. China is the only country with a separate CCS for herbal and traditional medicine in their domestic pharmacovigilance system.
