Molecular dynamics study of mechanical properties and fracture behavior of carbon and silicon carbide nanotubes under chemical adsorption of atoms

M. Eghbalian et al.

Summary: The study found that functionalized nanotubes have lower stress and strain at the breaking point, leading to reduced Young's modulus, toughness, and tensile strength. Fluorination has less influence on the weakening of Young's modulus. Armchair SWSiCNTs experience a nearly equal value of toughness in each weight of functionalization.

Porous structured cotton-based ACF for the adsorption of benzen

Yuanyu Ge et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of textural properties of cotton-based activated carbon fiber (CACF) on benzene adsorption, revealing the impact of carbonization temperature, phosphoric acid embedment, and micropore characteristics on the adsorption performance of CACF. The results showed the importance of micropore surface area and volume for benzene adsorption, with a preference for adsorption in micropore walls rather than larger pores. Additionally, it was found that the affinity of CACF for benzene could unexpectedly improve with a decrease in micropore size.

Effects of geometrical parameters and functionalization percentage on the mechanical properties of oxygenated single-walled carbon nanotubes

Mohesn Eghbalian et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of oxygen-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes were studied through MD simulations. It was found that increasing the functionalization percentage reduces all studied properties and the reasons for the alteration of the mechanical properties of nanotubes were discussed.

Room temperature gas sensing mechanism of SnO2 towards chloroform: Comparing first principles calculations with sensing experiments

Ahmed A. Abokifa et al.

Summary: In this study, room temperature sensing of chloroform gas using SnO2 nanostructured thin films synthesized via a single-step ACVD process is demonstrated. Theoretical calculations and simulations show that chloroform molecules have a thermodynamically favorable adsorption on the SnO2 surface, leading to a drop in surface resistance and a sensing response. Long-range dispersive interactions account for a significant portion of the adsorption energies, highlighting the stronger binding of chloroform on metal-oxides compared to carbon-based materials.

On the chirality-dependent adsorption behavior of volatile organic compounds on carbon nanotubes

Bin Li et al.

Summary: Different VOC species exhibit significantly different adsorption preferences on CNTs, with adsorption affinity positively correlated with hydrophobicity, increasing with CNT diameter. Moreover, the effects of chirality add complexity, as zigzag CNTs show greater adsorption affinity than armchair CNTs with similar diameters.

Molecular perspective on charge-tunable adsorption of volatile organic compounds on carbon nanotubes

Bin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behavior of VOC molecules on neutral and electrically charged CNTs through molecular dynamics simulations. The results revealed a strong correlation between the hydrophobicity of VOC molecules and their adsorption affinity, with electrically charged CNTs showing interactions through electrostatic attraction or repulsion with charged groups in the VOC molecules. The introduction of charges on the CNT surface can optimize the adsorption process of VOC molecules.
