Current and future therapies for type 1 diabetes

Bernt Johan von Scholten et al.

Summary: Insulin remains the key treatment for type 1 diabetes, but efforts are now shifting towards protecting beta cells to prevent dysfunction and destruction, with research focusing on antigen vaccination and agents that can reduce stress on the beta cells.

Mapping T Cell Responses to Native and Neo-Islet Antigen Epitopes in at Risk and Type 1 Diabetes Subjects

Summary: T cell responses to both native and neoepitopes in patients with type 1 diabetes and high-risk unaffected family members are similar in terms of frequency and phenotype. This suggests that neoepitopes are comparable to native epitopes for immune-monitoring studies.

Proinsulin-specific T-cell responses correlate with estimated c-peptide and predict partial remission duration in type 1 diabetes

Yassmin Musthaffa et al.

Summary: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the destruction of insulin-producing beta-cells by autoreactive T cells. This study found that CD4(+) T-cell proliferative responses to proinsulin-containing autoantigens are common before and immediately after diagnosis of T1D, but decrease thereafter. The Proinsulin(33-63)-specific CD4(+) T-cell response is a novel marker of estimated residual endogenous beta-cell function, predicting a better 2-year disease outcome.
