A brief review on the recent achievements in flow-electrode capacitive deionization

Seyed Nezameddin Ashrafizadeh et al.

Summary: This review briefly examines recent studies, achievements, and advancements in Flow-Electrode Capacitive Deionization (FCDI), a relatively new desalination method. The effects of membrane and electrode geometry, feeding procedures of slurries, electric field application modes, as well as slurry and membrane properties on desalination are all discussed. Despite some shortcomings, the future potential of FCDI as a mature and applicable desalination process with a significant role in engineering fields is highlighted.

Flow-electrode capacitive deionization: A review and new perspectives

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: Flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is a novel electro-driven desalination technology attracting growing interest for brackish water treatment, hypersaline water treatment, and selective resource recovery. The review sorts out potential parallel mechanisms in the FCDI desalination process, highlights the importance of flowable capacitive electrodes, and discusses the impact of electrode selection and flow circulation patterns on system performance. Future research directions are also proposed to support further applications of FCDI.
