MXene Nanosheet Templated Nanofiltration Membranes toward Ultrahigh Water Transport

Daliang Xu et al.

Summary: By utilizing a classical interfacial polymerization reaction on a two-dimensional lamellar layer of transition-metal carbides (MXene), a high-performance TFC nanofiltration membrane was successfully fabricated. The MXene layer aided in the absorption of reactive monomers, resulting in a thinner outer polyamide film and preventing the formation of polyamide in the substrate pores. This research presents a feasible strategy for producing high-performance nanofiltration membranes using two-dimensional nanosheets as templated interfaces.

A full-scale study of nanofiltration: Separation and recovery of NaCl and Na2SO4 from coal chemical industry wastewater

Yuan-Teng Shi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the importance of controlling residual chlorine content in front-end inlet water to maintain the long-term efficiency of nanofiltration membrane. The use of a pre-treatment unit such as coconut shell activated carbon can effectively remove residual chlorine, ensuring the efficiency and lifespan of the nanofiltration membrane. This work provides valuable insight for the development of nanofiltration membrane for large-scale separation and resource recovery of NaCl and Na2SO4 from coal chemical wastewaters.

Nanoscale control of internal inhomogeneity enhances water transport in desalination membranes

Tyler E. Culp et al.

Summary: Biological membranes achieve high permeabilities and ideal selectivities through well-defined nanoscale structures of membrane proteins. Polyamide desalination membranes can maximize water permeability without sacrificing salt selectivity by systematically controlling nanoscale polyamide inhomogeneity.

A Nano-Heterogeneous Membrane for Efficient Separation of Lithium from High Magnesium/Lithium Ratio Brine

Huawen Peng et al.

Summary: A new strategy for preparing positively charged nanofiltration membranes has been reported, which shows ultrapermeable and selective separation of lithium ions from concentrated magnesium/lithium mixtures. The modification of the membranes with a new electrolyte monomer improves water permeance and stability in continuous nanofiltration. High lithium flux has been achieved at 6 bar operation pressure.

Summary: The study proposes the use of integrated ZIF-L nanosheets as an assistance interlayer for the first time to eliminate the existence of pores on the ceramic support, providing a better basis for the formation of an intact PA selective layer. Experimental data collected during pervaporation show that the fabricated TFC membranes have great potential for practical applications in PV dehydration of organic solutions.

Janus charged polyamide nanofilm with ultra-high separation selectivity for mono-/divalent ions

Ze-Lin Qiu et al.

Summary: A facile and universal method was developed to fabricate polyamide NF membranes with ultra-high separation selectivity to both mono-/divalent anions and cations. By incorporating PAMAM dendrimers with different terminal quaternary ammonium groups into the polyamide matrix, the charge properties and network structures of the nanofilms were modulated, resulting in a high efficiency in mixed ion separation process. The Janus charged PA nanofilm, contributed by the heterogeneous distribution of PAMAM G5-TAC2, exhibited ultra-high separation selectivity to mono-/divalent anions and cations above 65, achieved through the synergistic effect of steric and Donnan effects.
