Alternating Current Electric Field Driven Topologically Defective Micro/nanomotors

Rencheng Zhuang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new type of electric-driven micro/nanomotor (DGMs) that generates a locally asymmetric field gradient through a topological defect, enabling controllable self-dielectrophoresis and induced-charge electrophoresis motion behaviors in different frequency ranges. The defective structure of DGMs allows for three-dimensional helical motion and attractive performance.

Polyhedral Micromotors of Metal-Organic Frameworks: Symmetry Breaking and Propulsion

Zhisheng Wang et al.

Summary: A novel method for preparing micromotors was reported, in which metal-organic framework microcrystals with polyhedral shapes are propelled under an AC electric field to break symmetry and achieve propulsion. By controlling the orientation of particles to generate uneven electrohydrodynamic flow, micromotors propulsion is achieved.

Rational Design of Self-Propelling Particles for Unified Cargo Loading and Transportation

Golak Kunti et al.

Summary: Recent studies have focused on electrically powered active particles that can both self-propel and manipulate cargo load and release, with a focus on spherically shaped Janus particles and parallel electrically conducting plates setup. By extending these active carriers to accommodate desired shapes and selective metallic coating using photolithography, controlled dielectrophoretic traps can be designed on them, allowing for sophisticated control over mobility and cargo loading. Additionally, these engineered particles exhibit diverse and rich behaviors compared to spherical JP, showing interesting motion in an electrically insulating substrate setup with in-plane electric field, tilt angle, and even flipping, depending on the field frequency and amplitude.

Fabrication and Electric Field-Driven Active Propulsion of Patchy Microellipsoids

Jin Gyun Lee et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the effect of surface patch shape on the trajectories of ellipsoidal particles propelled in an electric field, demonstrating that the shape of metal patches on the particles can be controlled by the assembled structure of the particles. Different shapes of patches lead to linear, circular, or helical trajectories, with the features of helical trajectories being tunable by varying patch asymmetry along the primary axes. By developing heuristics based on patch asymmetries, patchy particles with specific nonlinear trajectories can be designed.

Synthesis and Propulsion of Magnetic Dimers under Orthogonally Applied Electric and Magnetic Fields

Xingrui Zhu et al.

Summary: Anisotropic particles are used to make micro/nanomotors converting energy into mechanical energy. Most colloidal motors are hard to control but asymmetric dimers under AC electric fields show rich propulsion behaviors. By using orthogonal AC electric field and DC magnetic field, the speed and direction of dimers can be controlled independently, allowing for precise particle motion with complex trajectories. This approach has the potential to create other types of magnetically anisotropic particles and pave the way for assembling them into complex structures.

Unraveling the Autonomous Motion of Polymer-Based Catalytic Micromotors Under Chemical-Acoustic Hybrid Power

Gamze Celik Cogal et al.

Summary: A hybrid micromotor containing a conjugated polymer and a catalytic structure was developed, with its movement characterized under both chemical power and acoustic power. A theoretical model was used to predict and control the micromotor movement, achieving excellent agreement with experimental results and providing on/off control through design of geometries and acoustic field strengths.
