Liquid bridge splitting enhances normal capillary adhesion and resistance to shear on rough surfaces

Matthew D. Butler et al.

Summary: The splitting of bridges significantly enhances adhesion force between rough surfaces, with the enhancement increasing with surface roughness; maximizing the number of bridges can increase total adhesion force by an order of magnitude. Shear resistance increases linearly with translation velocity and the behavior of many shearing bridges is quantified.

Using an added liquid to suppress drying defects in hard particle coatings

Steffen B. Fischer et al.

Summary: The experiment demonstrates that capillary suspensions can help hard particle coatings dry uniformly, avoiding lateral accumulation and film defects. Bridges between particles and corner flow transport ensure the uniformity and stability of the coating.

Influence of drying conditions on the stress and weight development of capillary suspensions

Steffen B. Fischer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the drying process of capillary suspensions using simultaneous stress and weight measurements. Capillary suspensions dry more homogeneously and are more resistant to cracking compared to traditional suspensions. Increasing the relative humidity enhances the capillary bridge connection effect in capillary suspensions.

The Force Required to Detach a Rotating Particle from a Liquid-Fluid Interface

Abhinav Naga et al.

Summary: In this study, analytical expressions for the force required to detach a rotating spherical particle from a liquid-fluid interface were derived, with the theory predicting a reduction in detachment force due to rotation, particularly when there is contact angle hysteresis between the particle and the liquid.

Lateral and Normal Capillary Force Evolution of a Reciprocating Liquid Bridge

Qingrui Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the capillary forces of a shearing liquid bridge on interacting surfaces using a surface force apparatus. The results show linear relationships between the shear displacement of the bridge, the cosine difference of contact angles, and lateral adhesion force. A newly developed decahedral model improves the accuracy of quasi-static force analyses compared to previous cylindrical or rectangular column models.

Controlling Bicontinuous Structures through a Solvent Segregation-Driven Gel

Yuyin Xi et al.

Summary: In recent years, a new type of colloidal gel - SeedGel has been demonstrated as an effective method to control bicontinuous structures, such as repeating distances and domain sizes, by adjusting the sample composition. Research shows that the quenching rate is a key parameter for controlling domain sizes. Further high-temperature experiments reveal the structure evolution in SeedGel systems.

Nonequilibrium Structure Diagram of Pendular Suspensions under Large-Amplitude Oscillatory Shear

Bonan Hao et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of the shear field on particle aggregates and networks in pendular suspensions with immiscible secondary liquid bridges. The results show unique network destruction and reconstruction processes under large-amplitude-oscillatory shear, with different dependencies on the shear field. Two distinct mechanisms, shear-induced network breakdown at low strain and shear-induced agglomeration at high strain, are proposed to explain the nonmonotonic critical concentration behavior observed during upward strain sweeps.

Capillary Torque on a Particle Rotating at an Interface

Abhinav Naga et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that particles rotating at a liquid-fluid interface need to overcome a resistive capillary torque due to contact angle hysteresis. The capillary torque reduces the mobility of wet granular matter and prevents small particles from rotating when in Brownian motion at an interface. The expression for the capillary torque is equivalent to the friction force that a drop experiences when moving on a flat surface.

Life and death of colloidal bonds control the rate-dependent rheology of gels

Mohammad Nabizadeh et al.

Summary: The study explores the coupling between the kinetics of colloidal bonds and rheological response in attractive gels under different flow regimes. It reveals the importance of interplay between particle attraction and hydrodynamic stresses in understanding the physical basis of colloidal gel rheology. The research also presents visual mapping of particle bond dynamics and stresses under various flow conditions.

Microstructural design of printed graphite electrodes for lithium-ion batteries

Dominika Gastol et al.

Summary: The performance properties of lithium-ion battery electrodes are determined by the design of the coating composite microstructure. This study optimized the rheological properties of the graphite ink and utilized a specific printing process to manipulate the internal pore structure and electronic networks of high coat weight electrodes, resulting in improved performance and cycle life. Depositing electrodes via syringe showed enhanced electronic conductivities and diffusion coefficients, leading to better cycle life and higher energy density.

Elasticity of colloidal gels: structural heterogeneity, floppy modes, and rigidity

D. Zeb Rocklin et al.

Summary: By analyzing the experimentally measured bond networks of colloidal particle gels, the contradiction between variations in shear moduli and colloidal volume fraction changes is resolved. It is found that structural heterogeneity of the gels is crucial in understanding frequency-dependent elasticity. A phenomenological spring-dashpot model that accounts for the interplay between fluid viscosity, particle dissipation, and contributions from the affine and non-affine network deformation leads to a universal collapse of shear moduli.
