Sialylated milk oligosaccharides alter neurotransmitters and brain metabolites in piglets: an In vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopic (MRS) study

Hong Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The intervention of sialylated milk oligosaccharides (SMOS) in piglets resulted in increased levels of important brain metabolites and neurotransmitters, indicating a potential role in optimizing neurodevelopment. The study suggests that SMOS can alter brain chemistry in ways that are beneficial for neurodevelopment in piglets, serving as an animal model for human infants.

More than sugar in the milk: human milk oligosaccharides as essential bioactive molecules in breast milk and current insight in beneficial effects

Lianghui Cheng et al.

Summary: Human milk is essential for newborn infants as it provides bioactive components like human milk oligosaccharides (hMOs) which have beneficial functions such as supporting growth of beneficial bacteria, anti-pathogenic effects, immune modulation, and stimulation of intestine barrier functions. The application of hMOs produced via genetically engineered microorganisms in infant formulas is a promising advancement in mimicking the nutritional composition of breast milk and overcoming scientific challenges.

Maternal Fucosyltransferase 2 Status Associates with the Profiles of Human Milk Oligosaccharides and the Fecal Microbiota Composition of Breastfed Infants

Fan Liu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the profiles of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) from secretor or non-secretor mothers and the fecal microbiota composition of breastfed infants. The results showed higher levels of total and fucosylated HMOs in secretor mothers, while Bifidobacterium genus was more abundant in infants fed by non-secretor mothers. Associations between specific HMOs and Bifidobacterium strains were also found.

Sialylated human milk oligosaccharides program cognitive development through a non-genomic transmission mode

Jonas Hauser et al.

Summary: The selective deprivation of a specific sialylated milk oligosaccharide during lactation in mice was found to impact cognitive functions in adulthood, affecting attention, perseveration, memory, hippocampal electrophysiology, and pathways regulating the serotonergic system. This depletion was associated with reduced gene expression involved in central nervous system development in the prefrontal cortex, suggesting a short-term adjustment of cognitive development through maternal milk components.

Characterization of rat and mouse acidic milk oligosaccharides based on hydrophilic interaction chromatography coupled with electrospray tandem mass spectrometry

Jiaqi Li et al.

Summary: Oligosaccharides are crucial components in mammalian milk, promoting gut microbiota colonization and protecting newborns from infections. Research on acidic oligosaccharides in rats and mice is limited, but the identification of new oligosaccharides in these species provides baseline information for biological and biomedical studies.

Free sialic acid storage disorder: Progress and promise

Marjan Huizing et al.

Summary: Lysosomal free sialic acid storage disorder (FSASD) is an extremely rare, autosomal recessive, neurodegenerative, multisystemic disorder caused by defects in the lysosomal sialic acid membrane exporter SLC17A5 (sialin). Clinical features include coarse facial features, organomegaly, and progressive neurodegenerative symptoms. There is no approved therapy for FSASD, and efforts are being made to develop new treatments.

The Mean of Milk: A Review of Human Milk Oligosaccharide Concentrations throughout Lactation

Buket Soyyilmaz et al.

Summary: Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are complex carbohydrates abundant in human milk, with over 200 different structures identified. The concentrations of HMOs in breast milk vary according to lactation period and mother's genetic status. Studies have shown significant variations in HMO concentrations for different types across lactation stages. In mature pooled human milk, the top 15 individual HMOs make up the majority of total HMO concentration.

The fate of orally administered sialic acid: First insights from patients with N-acetylneuraminic acid synthase deficiency and control subjects

Christel Tran et al.

Summary: Oral administration of free NeuNAc did not affect ManNAc levels in NANS deficient patients or controls, indicating that it may not provide sufficient feedback inhibition to reduce ManNAc accumulation in this condition. These results do not support the potential for oral free NeuNAc as a treatment for NANS deficiency, but may guide further therapeutic approaches in the future.
