Exposure to particulate matter and carbon monoxide and cause-specific Cardiovascular-Respiratory disease mortality in Ahvaz

Maryam Dastoorpoor et al.

Summary: Short-term exposure to PM2.5 and CO is associated with increased non-accidental and respiratory mortality, while PM10 is related to hypertension-related deaths. Urban and rural residents should avoid polluted air, especially during dust storms to reduce health risks. More serious air pollution control is needed in Ahvaz.

Exploring the oxidative potential and respiratory deposition of size-segregated particulate matter at an urban site

Catalina Andrade et al.

Summary: The adverse health effects of PM are related to oxidative stress processes, and the oxidative potential (OP) can be used as an exposure metric for assessing the health impacts of ambient PM. Research on the relationship between respiratory deposition of size-segregated PM and OP in Santiago, Chile found that PM3.2 dominated lung deposition and may have a greater negative impact on lung health due to efficient adsorption of redox chemical species.

Mechanistic Insights into the Role of Iron, Copper, and Carbonaceous Component on the Oxidative Potential of Ultrafine Particulate Matter

Ion Tacu et al.

Summary: The results indicate that surface Cu plays a major role in the surface reactivity of CNPs, while Fe has a minor role. At the same time, Cu increases the cytotoxicity of CNPs and their ability to induce oxidative stress and DNA damage. In contrast, surface Fe increases the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines by macrophages. Overall, these results confirm the role of Cu and Fe in PM toxicity and suggest that the total metals content in PM might be a better indicator of pathogenicity than water-soluble metals.

Effects of PM2.5 exposure on reproductive system and its mechanisms

Lingjuan Wang et al.

Summary: Haze, especially PM2.5, poses a significant threat to the reproductive system by disrupting barrier structures, affecting hormone levels, and ultimately impacting fertility. Further research is needed to fully elucidate the exact mechanisms of reproductive toxicity caused by PM2.5.

Chronic Exposure to PM2.5 Nitrate, Sulfate, and Ammonium Causes Respiratory System Impairments in Mice

Jushan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the impact of PM2.5 NO3- on respiratory function is most significant, especially in young mice. Exposure to 22 μg/m3 of PM2.5 NO3- led to a decrease in peak expiratory flow and an increase in pulmonary neutrophil infiltration, indicating potential biological mechanisms of PM2.5 NO3- toxicity.

Personal Exposure to PM2.5 Oxidative Potential in Association with Pulmonary Pathophysiologic Outcomes in Children with Asthma

Linchen He et al.

Summary: This study found that increased personal exposure to PM2.5 oxidative potential was associated with higher airway resistance, increased airway impedance, decreased lung function, and worsened asthma symptoms. Organic matters largely of indoor origin were the main contributors to PM2.5 oxidative potential. Reducing PM2.5 oxidative potential, particularly by reducing organic matter in indoor PM2.5, is suggested as a targeted strategy in asthma management.

Effectiveness of indoor air purification intervention in improving cardiovascular health: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Xi Xia et al.

Summary: The study found potential short-term cardiovascular benefits of using indoor air purifiers, especially for systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, and reactive hyperaemia index. However, the overall certainty of evidence was very low, and more large-sample, longer-term follow-up RCTs are needed to verify these benefits.
