On the use of orchards to support soil aquifer treatment systems

Maayan Grinshpan et al.

Summary: This study experimentally explores the feasibility of using a citrus orchard as an alternative Ag-SAT setup by flooding it with secondary effluent for short periods during the winter. Results suggest that under the ridge setup, higher water quality and faster root zone aeration were achieved compared to the control plot, making it a promising Ag-SAT setup.

Mapping time-to-trafficability for California agricultural soils after dormant season deep wetting

Scott M. Devine et al.

Summary: Soil compaction is a threat to agricultural soil function, especially when the soil is moist. This study developed non-linear predictive functions to estimate the rain-free time-to-trafficability of different soil texture classes. The results revealed regional and seasonal patterns, providing valuable information for managing aquifer recharge and soil compaction risk.

Measuring nitrate leaching across the critical zone at the field to farm scale

Hanna Gurevich et al.

Summary: The study points out a lack of monitoring methods for nitrate leaching beyond the root zone in agricultural groundwater basins. The research investigates the relationship between N concentrations at different scales and presents highly variable measurement parameters across different sampling points. The findings have implications for developing appropriate tools for onsite monitoring of nitrogen emissions to groundwater on a field or farm scale.

Assessing the Feasibility of Managed Aquifer Recharge in California

Nicola Ulibarri et al.

Summary: This study assesses Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) projects proposed by groundwater sustainability agencies in California and examines the types of projects proposed, stated aims, potential barriers to implementation, and ability to achieve goals. Recharge basins are the most common approach, with hopes of improving water table levels, reducing subsidence, and improving water quality being primary goals. Concerns include lack of water availability, legal challenges, and minimal consideration of funding and land needs. Broader considerations for ensuring MAR as an effective water management tool are discussed in conclusion.

Global terrestrial water storage and drought severity under climate change

Yadu Pokhrel et al.

Summary: Using ensemble hydrological simulations, it is found that climate change could reduce TWS in many regions, especially in the Southern Hemisphere. The decline in TWS translates to an increase in future droughts, highlighting the need for climate change mitigation and improved water resource management and adaptation. By the late twenty-first century, the global land area and population in extreme-to-exceptional TWS drought could more than double.

Mobilization of Arsenic and Other Naturally Occurring Contaminants during Managed Aquifer Recharge: A Critical Review

Sarah Fakhreddine et al.

Summary: Population growth and climate variability have increased the need to enhance freshwater security and diversify water supplies, leading to the global use of managed aquifer recharge (MAR). However, the introduction of recharge water may alter geochemical and hydrological conditions in receiving aquifers, potentially mobilizing toxic naturally occurring contaminants and threatening human and ecosystem health.

Anthropogenic basin closure and groundwater salinization (ABCSAL)

Richard A. Pauloo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that groundwater development, even without overdraft, can lead to groundwater salinization and the closure of hydrologic basins. Using the Tulare Lake Basin in California as a case study, it was found that even with modern water management practices to reduce historic overuse, deep aquifers can still be impacted by salinization within two to three centuries. This poses a serious challenge to groundwater quality sustainability, suggesting that agriculturally intensive groundwater basins worldwide may be susceptible to these issues.

Natural and forced soil aeration during agricultural managed aquifer recharge

Yonatan Ganot et al.

Summary: The study investigated the soil aeration status during agricultural managed aquifer recharge (Ag-MAR) in California, revealing that controlled flooding duration and water application cycles can improve soil aeration and support crop growth. Additionally, forced aeration may be useful in large Ag-MAR projects to address localized oxygen deficiency zones caused by topographic irregularities and drainage property variability.

Influence of Agricultural Managed Aquifer Recharge (AgMAR) and Stratigraphic Heterogeneities on Nitrate Reduction in the Deep Subsurface

Hannah Waterhouse et al.

Summary: The study used a reactive transport model to analyze the impact of Agricultural Managed Aquifer Recharge (AgMAR) on nitrate (NO3-) leaching to groundwater under different management strategies. Simulation results indicated that finer textured sediments are crucial for providing conditions needed for denitrification, while applying water all-at-once may exacerbate groundwater quality issues but also increase denitrification within the vadose zone. The research concludes that AgMAR can be designed to enhance denitrification in the subsurface and reduce NO3- leaching to groundwater.

Rapid-Response Unsaturated Zone Hydrology: Small-Scale Data, Small-Scale Theory, Big Problems

John R. Nimmo et al.

Summary: The unsaturated zone plays a crucial role in land and water resource management by controlling water flow and reducing vulnerability to contaminants. Rapid flow and transport in the unsaturated zone are becoming more common due to extreme hydroclimatic events, yet they are poorly understood. Scaling issues pose challenges in accurately representing these processes at larger spatial scales.

A model for estimating Ag-MAR flooding duration based on crop tolerance, root depth, and soil texture data

Yonatan Ganot et al.

Summary: Agricultural Managed Aquifer Recharge (Ag-MAR) is an emerging technique that uses agricultural fields as percolation basins to recharge aquifers, but proper management is crucial to avoid harm to soil and crops. Root zone residence time (RZRT) is a key factor in Ag-MAR, as prolonged saturation can damage crops. A proposed model provides a way to estimate safe flooding duration for Ag-MAR based on hydraulic parameters and crop properties.

Summary: Water scarcity is a major challenge for economic and social development in arid and semi-arid regions. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR), including techniques like soil aquifer treatment (SAT) and agricultural MAR (Ag-MAR), is crucial for sustainable water management. The integration of agricultural fields for groundwater recharge through Ag-SAT could provide alternative infiltration sites and nutrient sources, presenting both advantages and challenges for water sustainability.

Introduction to the Special Collection: Institutional Dimensions of Groundwater Recharge

Kathleen Miller et al.

Summary: Unsustainable management of groundwater basins has led to groundwater depletion, and managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a mechanism that can help bring aquifers into sustainable balance. While MAR has significant physical potential, it remains underused due to lack of emphasis on institutional elements. Water managers recognize that institutional factors are equally important determinants, challenges, and potential drivers of MAR progress.
