Comparative Analysis of Flavonoid Metabolites in Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica) with Different Eating Quality

Yakun Zhang et al.

Summary: Foxtail millet contains carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin, as well as flavonoids. Varieties of foxtail millet with high and poor eating quality show significant differences in flavonoid metabolites. These findings lay the groundwork for further research on flavonoids and breeding high-quality foxtail millet varieties.

Wheat, Barley, and Oat Breeding for Health Benefit Components in Grain

Igor G. Loskutov et al.

Summary: Cereal grains play a vital role in human nutrition, with new products emerging on the market. Breeding programs are now focused on developing cultivars with higher levels of bioactive compounds, vitamins, dietary fibers, and oils. Through traditional breeding approaches, along with genetic editing and chemotyping techniques, modern cereal crops are being enriched with micronutrients and other health-promoting components, potentially leading to cultivars better adapted to environmental challenges.

Seed longevity of maize conserved under germplasm bank conditions for up to 60 years

Filippo Guzzon et al.

Summary: Long-term conservation of plant genetic resources is vital for food security and biodiversity preservation. A study at the CIMMYT germplasm bank revealed that maize seeds stored in an active chamber had lower and more variable germination rates compared to those stored in a base conservation chamber. Different maize varieties also showed significant differences in seed longevity, indicating the need for tailored monitoring and regeneration intervals based on seed traits and passport data.

Metabolome profiling reveals impact of water limitation on grain filling in contrasting rice genotypes

Preethi Vijayaraghavareddy et al.

Summary: This study compared the response of drought-susceptible IR64 and drought-tolerant Apo rice genotypes under water limitation during grain filling. Apo showed better performance with lower reduction in photosynthetic rate and leaf temperature, as well as less impact on days to maturity, spikelet fertility, seed weight, and transpiration rate compared to IR64. Metabolomic profiling revealed distinct effects of water limitation on metabolite accumulation, with Apo showing upregulation of scavenging mechanisms and higher accumulation of amino acids, while IR64 had higher levels of carbohydrates. Overall, Apo exhibited a lower reduction in yield due to higher source capacity, better source to sink transport, and enhanced scavenging mechanisms.

Epigenetic Integrity of Orthodox Seeds Stored under Conventional and Cryogenic Conditions

Beata P. Plitta-Michalak et al.

Summary: The study found a significant increase in m(5)C level in pear tree seeds under conventional storage conditions, while a decrease was observed under cryogenic storage conditions, indicating that non-optimal cryostorage conditions increase epigenetic instability in seeds and seedlings.

Modern Approaches for the Genetic Improvement of Rice, Wheat and Maize for Abiotic Constraints-Related Traits: A Comparative Overview

Elena Benavente et al.

Summary: This review paper provides a basic description of genetic tools and genomic approaches relevant for modern crop breeding, focusing on rice, wheat and maize research. Differences in the development of genetic approaches among major crops are evident, possibly due to their distinct genome complexity. Drought tolerance and water-use efficiency are the most abundantly addressed breeding objectives based on bibliographic records.

OsGRETCHENHAGEN3-2 modulates rice seed storability via accumulation of abscisic acid and protective substances

Zhiyang Yuan et al.

Summary: This study cloned and characterized the rice seed storability-related gene OsGH3-2, which was shown to affect seed storability by regulating the accumulation level of abscisic acid (ABA). Transgenic, knockout, and knockdown experiments revealed that OsGH3-2 acted as a negative regulator of seed storability by modulating genes related to the ABA pathway and late embryogenesis-abundant proteins.
