Carbonation resistance study and inhomogeneity evolution of recycled aggregate concretes under loading effects

Renjie Mi et al.

Summary: The study found that carbonation-load coupling effects can exacerbate the inhomogeneity of recycled aggregate concrete with old attached mortar and new added mortar, significantly impacting mortar microstructure and steel corrosion zone width. Using old attached mortar in the tensile zone as samples can evaluate the carbonation service life of RAC structures to avoid overestimating structural safety.

Examining construction waste management policies in mainland China for potential performance improvements

Hao Lv et al.

Summary: Construction waste management should receive more attention in all cities, as about 44% of cities do not have their own regulations; policies have shifted focus from the end of the construction waste chain to the start of the construction waste management chain and then to the whole chain; financial and technological instruments can greatly improve performance; new technologies and tools can facilitate communication between stakeholders to enhance construction waste performance.

Durability and shrinkage performance of concrete made with coarse multi-recycled concrete aggregates

Stefano Silva et al.

Summary: An extensive experimental study was conducted to investigate the durability performance of concrete made with recycled coarse aggregates from multiple recycling cycles. The results show that as the number of recycling cycles increases, the properties of the recycled coarse aggregates decrease, leading to poorer durability and shrinkage performance of the resulting concrete. Moreover, the decrease in performance tends to slow down with the increase of recycling cycles, showing an asymptotic behavior.

Compressive behavior of compound concrete containing demolished concrete lumps and recycled aggregate concrete

Si-Min Jian et al.

Summary: The study suggests that reusing coarsely crushed demolished concrete lumps (DCLs) and recycled coarse aggregates (RAs) simultaneously in recycled lump/aggregate concrete (RLAC) can significantly increase the total waste content compared to recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). It was found that even when the total waste content in RLAC reaches 54.6%, satisfactory compressive strength can still be achieved. However, the compressive strength of RLAC containing 100% RA replacement ratio is much lower compared to RAC.

Autogenous shrinkage and drying shrinkage of recycled aggregate concrete: A review

Yuguang Mao et al.

Summary: RAC has lower autogenous shrinkage compared to NAC due to the internal curing effect of RCA; however, its drying shrinkage is larger mainly because of the mortar attached to OVA. Strengthening adhered mortar or removing it can effectively reduce the drying shrinkage of RCA.

Quality improvement of recycled concrete aggregate by removal of residual mortar: A comprehensive review of approaches adopted

Vivian W. Y. Tam et al.

Summary: To achieve sustainable development, research studies focus on reducing construction and demolition waste to improve sustainability and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Recycled concrete aggregate often has low specific gravity and high water absorption due to residual adhered mortar. Researchers aim to improve the aggregate quality by either removing adhered mortar or fortifying it to enhance properties. Techniques to enhance quality involve separating mortar from aggregate grains and utilizing it effectively, leading to economically viable treatments.
