The effect of temperature on the drained shear behavior of calcareous sand

Shao-Heng He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of temperature on the drained shear behavior of calcareous sand. The results show that an increase in temperature aggravates particle breakage, affecting the strength and dilatancy of the sand. A stress-dilatancy equation and an empirical model for phi(cs) were proposed based on the experimental findings.

Experimental investigation on mechanical behavior and particle crushing of calcareous sand retrieved from South China Sea

Yang Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical properties and particle crushing behavior of calcareous sand. Experimental results showed that the amount of particle crushing in calcareous sand increased with higher density and confining stress. The shear response of calcareous sand was well interpreted within the critical state framework based on experimental data and analysis.

Particle breakage characteristics of a foundation filling material on island-reefs in the South China Sea

Xing Wang et al.

Summary: Calcareous sand is the predominant building material in island-reefs in the South China Sea. Multiple triaxial shear tests were conducted to investigate the particle breakage and evolution of calcareous gravelly sand (CGS), showing that the relative breakage rate is a better indicator of particle breakage degree than grading parameters. The relationship between plastic work and relative breakage rate was found to be inversely proportional and not significantly affected by relative density or effective confining pressure.

Comparative study on cyclic behavior of marine calcareous sand and terrigenous siliceous sand for transportation infrastructure applications

Zhi Ding et al.

Summary: The study compared the cyclic behavior of calcareous sand and siliceous sand through high-cycle drained triaxial tests, showing that calcareous sand has stronger shear strength and resistance to permanent deformation. However, calcareous sand exhibited a higher rate of permanent strain accumulation during the early and middle stages of cyclic loading compared to siliceous sand. The study also found that particle shape and breakage have different impacts on the increase of resilient modulus during different loading stages.

Effect of waste rubber particles on the shear behaviour of bio-cemented calcareous sand

Ming-Juan Cui et al.

Summary: The study investigates the shear behavior of bio-cemented calcareous sand and finds that shear strength increases with cementation level, while brittle behavior becomes more significant. Waste rubber particles are effective in improving the brittle behavior, reducing dilation and slowing changes in dilatancy under stress.

Constitutive Modeling for Two Sands under High Pressure

Yang Xiao et al.

Summary: Particle breakage is a typical characteristic of crushable granular soil under high pressure, which significantly affects its stress-strain behaviors. The downward shift of the critical state line in the compression plane caused by particle breakage is depicted by a breakage-dependent critical state plane, and pressure-dependent plastic modulus parameters are introduced to capture the influence of high pressure on particle breakage.

Strength and dilatancy of coral sand in the South China Sea

Xing Wang et al.

Summary: Consolidated-drained triaxial shear tests were conducted to clarify the effects of compactness and stress level on coral sand in the reclaimed foundation of island reefs. The results showed that the strain softening and dilatancy characteristics of coral sand decreased with increasing effective confining pressure and decreasing compactness within a certain range of confining pressure.

Chemical stabilization of calcareous sand by polyurethane foam adhesive

Gaoliang Tao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical soil stabilization of calcareous sand in the South China Sea using Polyurethane Foam Adhesive (PFA), demonstrating the improvement of mechanical properties of the treated soil. The study reveals that particle gradation significantly affects the stress-strain response and CBR values of stabilized calcareous sand, with an optimal PFA content proposed for each grading.

Experimental investigation on the stress-dilatancy response of aggregate-geogrid interface using parameterized shapes

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of particle shape on the interface interaction between soil particle and geogrid in reinforced soil structures. Direct shear tests demonstrated that different particle shapes alter the geosynthetic-soil interface shear response under varying normal stresses and geogrid apertures. The results showed that increasing overall regularity led to a decrease in interface shear strength and friction angle.

Nonlinear Model for the Stress-Strain-Strength Behavior of Unsaturated Granular Materials

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: This study formulated a new nonlinear model to describe the behaviors of granular materials under unsaturated conditions, incorporating factors such as nonlinear stiffness, nonlinear stress dilatancy, and critical state to enhance model performance. Experimental results showed that the model could effectively consider the suction effect, reproducing the behavior of unsaturated granular materials adequately.
