Self-assembly of corrosion inhibitors-intercalated layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in cementitious systems

Hailong Ye

Summary: This work investigates the self-assembly of corrosion inhibitor-intercalated layered double hydroxides in cementitious systems. The research reveals the impacts of inorganic and organic corrosion inhibitors on the intercalation chemistry and chloride-induced transformation of LDHs. The results show that direct admixing of inhibitors results in the spontaneous formation of inhibitors-intercalated LDHs, regardless of binder chemistry. The incorporation of inhibitors has little influence on chloride binding capacity but affects chloride resistance through pore structure modification.

Hydration and microstructure of calcined hydrotalcite activated high-volume fly ash cementitious composite

Wu-Jian Long et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel method to improve the performance of cementitious composites blended with high-volume fly ash by using calcined layered double hydroxide. Experimental results showed that 0.5% CLDH addition can effectively increase the early-age strength of HVFA cementitious composites and alter the microstructure.

The combined effect of CO2 and calcined hydrotalcite on one-coat limestone mortar properties

David Suescum-Morales et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combined effect of different percentages of calcined hydrotalcite and different concentrations of CO2 on the fresh and hardened properties of one-coat mortar. Calcined hydrotalcite helped maintain the mechanical properties of mortar while CO2 improved dry bulk density and mechanical properties. The presence of calcined hydrotalcite mitigated the carbonation phenomenon, reducing the appearance of pathologies in coatings.

Hydration and pore-structure characteristics of high-volume fly ash cement pastes

Byoungsun Park et al.

Summary: The study found that there is a correlation between the hydration degree of HVFA cement and pore structure, and as the FA replacement ratio increased, the degree of hydration of cement increased while the degree of reaction of FA decreased. Furthermore, the gel/space ratio of HVFA cement paste showed a strong correlation with compressive strength.

Synergistic use of sodium bicarbonate and aluminum sulfate to enhance the hydration and hardening properties of Portland cement paste

Songhui Liu et al.

Summary: A novel composite admixture containing sodium bicarbonate and aluminum sulfate was developed to generate calcium carbonate nano-reinforced particles in situ in Portland cement paste. The admixture accelerated the hydration process, reduced setting time, promoted the formation of more hydration products, and improved the compressive strength of the cement paste. In situ CaCO3 with a fine grain size was generated, reacting with aluminum phase to form mono-carbonate, resulting in a dense microstructure of the hardened cement paste.
