Tunable dissipation in elastic metamaterials via methodic reconfiguration of inertant mechanical networks

A. Aladwani et al.

Summary: Elastic metamaterials offer transformative solutions in structural mechanics by exploiting their unique capabilities in wave propagation and control. This study comprehensively analyzes the influence of different configurations of a hierarchical mechanical network on the response, bandgap characteristics, and emergent dissipation. The authors demonstrate the significant roles played by network components, architecture, and damping placement using examples of locally resonant flexural beams. The presented framework enables a direct comparison with finite metamaterial counterparts and provides insights for tailoring efficient damped responses for specific applications.

Impact of the Unit Cell Choice on the Efficiency of Dispersion Curve Calculations Using Generalized Bloch Mode Synthesis

Vanessa Cool et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the potential of metamaterials and phononic crystals in achieving lightweight structures with desired noise and vibration properties. These structures, often periodic, are analyzed using representative unit cells and their wave propagation is visualized using dispersion curves. Finite element techniques are commonly used to discretize the unit cells, leading to high computation costs for dispersion curve calculations. Modal-based model order reduction techniques, such as the generalized Bloch mode synthesis (GBMS), can significantly reduce computation time. This paper investigates the impact of unit cell choices on dispersion curve calculation time and highlights the efficiency of GBMS, particularly when the number of boundary degrees-of-freedom is limited.

Improving the generalized Bloch mode synthesis method using algebraic condensation

Chenyang Xi et al.

Summary: This article presents a technique that improves the computational performance of the generalized Bloch mode synthesis method using algebraic condensation. By simplifying the unit cell further and reducing the characteristic constraint modes, the computational cost is effectively reduced, and the effectiveness of the method is demonstrated through numerical examples.
