An assessment of multi-scale models based on second-order computational homogenisation

Igor A. Rodrigues Lopes et al.

Summary: This contribution examines multi-scale formulations that combine macro-scale second gradient theory with classical continuum at the micro-scale. Different homogenisation formulations are reviewed and compared, with some formulations showing equivalent behavior despite different initial assumptions. Issues such as spurious localisation, over constraint, and non-physical warping may arise in certain formulations, impacting their predictive capability.

On the efficient enforcement of uniform traction and mortar periodic boundary conditions in computational homogenisation

Igor A. Rodrigues Lopes et al.

Summary: This contribution explores the enforcement of uniform traction and periodic boundary conditions on arbitrarily generated meshes, presenting the derivation of the associated macroscopic consistent tangent operators. The study shows that the UT condition only requires rigid body motion to be prescribed in a finite strain setting, with the Lagrange multiplier method leading to a formulation where the homogenised stresses act as the Lagrange multipliers. The computational performance of both methods is compared in terms of time and memory requirements, with the SPS method found to be more efficient in spite of increasing the number of unknowns in the linear system of equations.
