Material design of soft biological tissue replicas using viscoelastic micromechanical modelling

Sarah-Jane Estermann et al.

Summary: This study proposes a strategy for designing material microstructures to mimic soft tissue viscoelastic behavior based on a micromechanical Mori-Tanaka model. The validation of the model shows good agreement with experimental results for low inclusion volume fractions, but underestimates the complex modulus for high fractions.

Trabecular Meshwork Motion Profile from Pulsatile Pressure Transients: A New Platform to Simulate Transitory Responses in Humans and Nonhuman Primates

Chen Xin et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new laboratory platform to investigate the motion responses of trabecular meshwork (TM) to ocular transients. The findings suggest that abnormal TM motion is a leading cause of glaucoma and that the platform permits quantitation of TM motion responses to designed pulse transients. The study's implications include improved interpretation of new TM motion measurements in clinic and a better understanding of glaucoma mechanisms and management.

Valve-Like Outflow System Behavior With Motion Slowing in Glaucoma Eyes: Findings Using a Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery-MIGS-Like Platform and Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging

Murray Johnstone et al.

Summary: This study used high-resolution optical coherence tomography (HR-OCT) to investigate the anatomic relationships and biomechanics of pressure-dependent trabecular meshwork and distal valve-like structure deformation in normal and glaucoma eyes. The results showed synchronous changes in Schlemm's canal and collector channels lumina areas with pressure variations in both normal and glaucoma eyes.

Biomechanics of the keratoconic cornea: Theory, segmentation, pressure distribution, and coupled FE-optimization algorithm

Seyed Mohammadali Rahmati et al.

Summary: The study aimed to establish patient-specific geometries of healthy and KC corneas and calculate pressure distribution on the corneal surface as a function of distance and time using a coupled FE optimization algorithm. Results showed that optimizing pressure distributions as a function of distance and time for healthy and KC corneas led to lower mean percentage error compared to clinical data by CorVis-ST.

Analysis of the effects of finite element type within a 3D biomechanical model of a human optic nerve head and posterior pole

Alireza Karimi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different element types on the resulting ONH stresses and strains. Results showed that 10-noded tetrahedral elements yielded similar results to 20-noded hexahedral elements with significantly lower computational time, while linear element types did not yield acceptable results.

Inverse dynamic finite element-optimization modeling of the brain tumor mass-effect using a variable pressure boundary

Fatemeh Abdolkarimzadeh et al.

Summary: In this study, a fully-coupled inverse dynamic FE-optimization method was employed to estimate the resultant variable pressure boundary due to tumor resection surgery, with findings showing that a variable pressure boundary leads to a considerably lower mean percentage error compared to a constant pressure one. This approach can effectively address realistic boundaries in tumor resection surgery and predict mass-effect.

Measuring collagen fibril diameter with differential interference contrast microscopy

Seyed Mohammad Siadat et al.

Summary: Using a combination of DIC microscopy and electron microscopy, researchers established a linear relationship between collagen diameter and DIC edge intensity shift (DIC-EIS). This simple, nondestructive, label-free method allows for accurate measurement of fibril diameter, providing a new tool for studying collagen dynamics.

Modeling the biomechanics of the lamina cribrosa microstructure in the human eye

Alireza Karimi et al.

Summary: Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide, characterized by irreversible damage to the retinal ganglion cell axons. Limited knowledge exists on the biomechanics of the lamina cribrosa (LC) microstructure. Finite element modeling of the LC microstructure and neural tissues in human eyes showed that the microstructural models provided better estimates of stress and strain distribution compared to continuum models.
