Educational trends post COVID-19 in engineering: Virtual laboratories

Diego Vergara et al.

Summary: The rapid advance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the current pandemic have greatly impacted society and the economy worldwide. The education sector has benefited from this technological revolution, particularly the use of virtual laboratories (VLs) based on virtual reality (VR) to facilitate teaching and learning. This study involving 420 engineering students from Spanish and Portuguese universities shows that VR-based VLs are widely accepted and demanded, while students still consider real laboratories necessary in face-to-face teaching. In the post-COVID-19 educational scenario, VLs and real laboratories will coexist within hybrid models of teaching and learning.

The Application of Virtual Reality in Engineering Education

Maged Soliman et al.

Summary: VR technology has shown positive cognitive and pedagogical benefits in engineering education, improving students' understanding and performance in subjects while reducing institutions' liability, infrastructure, and costs. Additionally, it offers equal educational experiences for students with special needs and those in distance learning programs. Although there is a lack of integration of learning theories and objectives in current VR applications for education, constructivist and variation learning theories show potential for successful implementation in VR education.
