An explicit phase field model for progressive tensile failure of composites

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: This work focuses on systematically investigating progressive failure in composite laminate using a novel phase field model. An alternative approach with explicit solvers is presented to address the issues of solving efficiency and convergence in existing implicit solvers for the PFMs. The proposed model effectively captures various failure modes in composites and demonstrates improved computational efficiency with parallel computing.

Virtual characterization of nonlocal continuum damage model parameters using a high fidelity finite element model

Johannes Reiner et al.

Summary: A virtual finite element framework is proposed to simulate fiber-dominated damage behavior in composite laminates under tensile loading, transitioning from high fidelity to computationally efficient models. The effectiveness of the nonlocal continuum damage model CODAM2 in predicting structural response in large-scale tests is demonstrated through comparison with high fidelity models and experimental data.

From diffuse damage to discrete crack: A coupled failure model for multi-stage progressive damage of composites

X. Lu et al.

Summary: The study proposes a coupled failure model (CFM) that incorporates both smeared crack model (SCM) and discrete crack model (DCM) to address the challenges in damage analyses of fibre-reinforced composite laminates. CFM effectively characterizes the progressive failure process from diffuse damage to propagation of major cracks, while resolving inherent limitations of each standalone model. Performance of CFM is demonstrated through numerical examples, including element validation and tests of composite laminates.
