Improving the structural properties of composite T-joints by z-weaving of continuous metallic filaments

S. Abbasi et al.

Summary: This study investigates improving the maximum load limit and other structural properties of T-shaped laminate joints through through-thickness weaving of thin metal filaments. The results show that stainless steel z-filaments provide the greatest improvements in strength and absorbed energy capacity, followed by copper filaments and then carbon fibre filaments. Through-thickness weaving of continuous metallic filaments is highly effective at strengthening T-joints made of laminated composites.

Improving the delamination fatigue resistance of composites by 3D woven metal and composite Z-filaments

S. Abbasi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanisms and effectiveness of metallic and composite z-filaments in improving the interlaminar fatigue resistance of fibre-polymer laminates. Results show that steel z-filaments are more effective than copper filaments in resisting fatigue crack initiation and growth under interlaminar cyclic loads. Differences in crack bridging efficiency under interlaminar fatigue loading contribute to the varying extents of improvement provided by the three filaments.
