Negative impacts of microcystin-LR and glyphosate on zebrafish intestine: Linked with gut microbiota and microRNAs?

Weikai Ding et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that exposure to MC-LR and/or GLY can increase intestinal permeability, induce an inflammatory response, cause tissue damage, alter the gut microbiome, and affect the expression of miRNAs in zebrafish.

Can the sonication of polystyrene nanoparticles alter the acute toxicity and swimming behavior results for Daphnia magna?

Vitor P. Vaz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of sonication on the acute toxicity and swimming behavior of polystyrene nanoparticles using Daphnia magna as the test organism. Results showed a 2-fold reduction in acute toxicity after sonication, possibly through the formation of an eco-corona on the nanoplastic surface. Additionally, mean swimming distance was reduced for both sonicated and non-sonicated samples.

Effects of butyl benzyl phthalate exposure on Daphnia magna growth, reproduction, embryonic development and transcriptomic responses

Jing Li et al.

Summary: BBP has toxic effects on the reproductive and developmental toxicity of D. magna, including reduced survival ratio, decreased body length, increased abnormal ratio, and reduced offspring. BBP exposure inhibits the expression of the vitellogenin gene, leading to embryotoxicity and shortened embryonic development cycle.

Chronic feeding exposure to virgin and spiked microplastics disrupts essential biological functions in teleost fish

Bettie Cormier et al.

Summary: The toxicity of polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics (MPs) was evaluated in zebrafish and marine medaka over 4 months. The exposure through diet resulted in a significant decrease in growth and reproductive output, with PVC showing more reprotoxic effects compared to PE. The presence of sorbed chemicals in MPs may lead to serious ecological disruptions.

Size-dependent chronic toxicity of fragmented polyethylene microplastics to Daphnia magna

Dahee An et al.

Summary: The chronic toxicity of fragmented microplastics (MPs) on Daphnia magna was higher compared to MP beads, leading to reduced feeding, survival rate, body length, and offspring in the exposed organisms. Further studies are needed to understand the underlying toxicity mechanisms and potential ecological risks posed by MP fragmentation.

Size-dependent effects of microplastic on uptake, immune system, related gene expression and histopathology of goldfish (Carassius auratus)

Safoura Abarghouei et al.

Summary: With the increase in industrialization, pollution of aquatic ecosystems with plastic derivatives has become a serious concern, affecting the physiological functions of goldfish. Exposure to different concentrations and sizes of polystyrene revealed significant toxic effects on goldfish, inducing histological lesions and oxidative stress responses.

Long-term adverse effects of microplastics on Daphnia magna reproduction and population growth rate at increased water temperature and light intensity: Combined effects of stressors and interactions

Lucia Guilhermino et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics (MPs) have long-term toxicity to Daphnia magna, causing mortality, reduced growth and reproduction, and impacting the population growth rate, with effects influenced by light intensity and water temperature; the interaction between MPs and different environmental conditions varied in their effects on population growth rate.

Effect of microplastics on growth and biochemical composition of microalga Acutodesmus obliquus

F. A. Ansari et al.

Summary: Microplastics have been detected in various aquatic ecosystems, with their impact on microalgal growth and metabolism being investigated in this study. The results show that while microalgae like Acutodesmus obliquus can adapt to microplastics in the medium, higher concentrations can lead to metabolic changes in the organism. The findings of this study lay the foundation for further exploration of microplastic toxicity and adaptation mechanisms in microalgal species.
