Numerical analysis of kinetic mechanisms for battery thermal runaway prediction in lithium-ion batteries

Antonio Garcia et al.

Summary: The urgent need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions has led to powertrain electrification, but new hazards like battery pack combustion have emerged. Research on different reaction mechanisms for lithium-ion batteries is ongoing, with results showing that the mechanism proposed by Kriston provides the best trade-off in simulating thermal runaway conditions.

Predicting cell-to-cell failure propagation and limits of propagation in lithium-ion cell stacks

Andrew Kurzawski et al.

Summary: This research focuses on predicting cell-to-cell failure propagation and propagation limits in lithium-ion cell stacks to better understand and identify safe designs. The new thermal-runaway model is evaluated against propagating failure, showing that high temperature propagating failure predictions are too rapid.

Theoretical and numerical analysis for thermal runaway propagation within a single cell

Peng Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, a coupled reaction-heat conduction model was developed to analyze the thermal runaway propagation in batteries. Analytical solutions for the propagation speed of the reaction front were obtained based on asymptotic analysis and numerical methods, showing the impact of parameters fi and battery temperature. The results indicate that the propagation speed decreases with increasing fi and increases with battery temperature, with variations in the thermal structure of the reaction front under different fi and Ou conditions.

Theoretical analysis on the transient ignition of a premixed expanding flame in a quiescent mixture

Dehai Yu et al.

Summary: The ignition of a self-sustained premixed expanding flame is a crucial problem in combustion research, and a transient formulation has been proposed in this work to address this issue. The theory considers the unsteady evolution of temperature and fuel mass fraction distributions under central heating, determining critical heating power and minimum ignition energy. The transient flame initiation process consists of four stages, and the unsteady effects considerably affect flame propagation characteristics.
