Summary: The study analyzed EuBIVAS data and found significant differences between males and females in mean values, while countries, alcohol intake, smoking habits, BMI, and physical activity had no significant impact on the measured values. The results suggest that the EuBIVAS sample has a certain degree of homogeneity.

Luca Ronzio et al.

Summary: This article presents a systematic literature review on the application of machine learning in laboratory medicine, focusing on studies from 2017 to the present that have utilized machine learning techniques to analyze haematochemical parameters for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. The review aims to address the potential of these techniques in laboratory medicine and the under-utilization of this tool in the past.

External validation of Machine Learning models for COVID-19 detection based on Complete Blood Count

Andrea Campagner et al.

Summary: This study externally validated 6 state-of-the-art diagnostic ML models trained on CBC with an average AUC of 95% and Brier score of 0.11, outperforming existing methods. The best performing model (SVM) achieved an average AUC of 97.5% and good calibration, showing potential for early identification of COVID-19 patients.

The importance of being external. methodological insights for the external validation of machine learning models in medicine

Federico Cabitza et al.

Summary: This study introduces a meta-validation method to assess the robustness of medical machine learning models through external validation procedures, considering dataset cardinality and data similarity. The results showed that the validation datasets had adequate cardinality and similarity, leading to good performance of the validated model, indicating the reliability of the results.

Prediction of ICU admission for COVID-19 patients: a Machine Learning approach based on Complete Blood Count data

Lorenzo Famiglini et al.

Summary: The research team developed three machine learning models based on a large number of complete blood count tests, including a decision tree, a logistic regression, and a black-box model, to predict whether COVID-19 patients will need to be transferred to the ICU in the next 5 days. The results showed that the black-box model had the highest AUC of 0.88. Therefore, this study demonstrates that CBC data and machine learning methods can be effectively used to predict the need for ICU admission in COVID-19 patients, particularly in resource-limited environments.

Summary: The study verified the applicability of a protocol for the alignment of hematology analyzers based on control material rather than fresh whole-blood samples. Results showed complete alignment for most parameters, but partial misalignments were evident for certain white cell series parameters, highlighting the importance of paying attention to the values of the material used for alignment.
