Interannual Influences of the Surface Potential Vorticity Forcing over the Tibetan Plateau on East Asian Summer Rainfall

Chen Sheng et al.

Summary: This study explores the influences of interannual surface potential vorticity forcing over the Tibetan Plateau on East Asian summer rainfall and upper-level circulation. The results indicate that this surface potential vorticity forcing is closely related to the EASR and associated circulations. The positive phase of the potential vorticity leads to increased rainfall in certain regions, while the negative phase leads to decreased rainfall. Furthermore, the mechanism behind this influence is proposed, involving the stimulation of upward motion and anomalous cyclone by the positive phase of the potential vorticity.

Abnormal warm sea-surface temperature in the Indian Ocean, active potential vorticity over the Tibetan Plateau, and severe flooding along the Yangtze River in summer 2020

Tingting Ma et al.

Summary: Excessive precipitation was observed in the Yangtze River Valley during the record-breaking Meiyu season in 2020. The activity of high potential vorticity (PV) systems during their eastward propagation over the eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) is responsible for the above-normal rainfall in both western and eastern China. The formation of high-PV systems is closely related to the thermal contrast between the near-surface and lower atmosphere, and their arrival timing at the eastern flank of the TP plays an important role in subsequent development and precipitation downstream.

Characteristics of the potential vorticity and its budget in the surface layer over the Tibetan plateau

Chen Sheng et al.

Summary: The study reveals the significant vertical and horizontal components of surface potential vorticity on the Tibetan Plateau, with the vertical component dominating and the horizontal component playing a key role, especially on the slopes. The surface potential vorticity budget equation is well balanced in terms of climate mean and synoptic processes, with a prominent diurnal cycle in June. Positive potential vorticity generation due to diabatic heating is crucial for the formation, development, and movement of the Tibetan Plateau vortex.

Impact of potential vorticity anomalies around the eastern Tibetan Plateau on quasi-biweekly oscillations of summer rainfall within and south of the Yangtze Basin in 2016

Guanshun Zhang et al.

Summary: The summer of 2016 saw six persistent heavy rainfall events in Hubei, Anhui, and Jiangxi provinces, mostly regulated by the 10-20-day quasi-biweekly oscillation (QBWO). These events were characterized by strong ascending and descending motions associated with anomalous upper-tropospheric circulation fields, driven by eastward-propagating middle-high latitude wave trains and westward-migrating tropical potential vorticity (PV) anomalies. The QBWO was closely linked with upstream PV anomalies generated over the eastern slope of the Tibetan Plateau, with topographic lateral friction playing a key role in the development of the anomalous circulation over the Hubei-Anhui-Jiangxi region.

The Detailed Dynamics of the Hadley Cell. Part II: December-February

B. J. Hoskins et al.

Summary: This paper provides a detailed analysis of the December-February Hadley cell as seen in a 30-yr climatology of ERA-Interim data, focusing on the dynamics of the upper branch of the Hadley cell. The results show that active convection predominantly leads to upper-tropospheric outflows and structures, affecting the interaction between tropical eddies and higher-latitude systems. The study supports a new conceptual model of the Hadley cell based on the sporadic nature of active tropical convection in time and space.

PV Perspective of Impacts on Downstream Extreme Rainfall Event of a Tibetan Plateau Vortex Collaborating with a Southwest China Vortex

Guanshun Zhang et al.

Summary: An extreme rainfall event occurred over the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze Basin in late June 2016, attributed to a Tibetan Plateau Vortex and a Southwest China Vortex. The physical mechanism of this event was investigated based on Potential Vorticity and omega perspectives. The coalescence of the Tibetan Plateau Vortex and Southwest China Vortex enhanced the rainfall process in the region.
