Direct carbonization of sodium lignosulfonate through self-template strategies for the synthesis of porous carbons toward supercapacitor applications

Xiaoshan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel approach for the synthesis of lignin-derived porous carbon materials using alkalized sodium lignosulfonate as a precursor. The introduction of alkaline metal ions in the precursor plays a crucial role as a template for the generation of porous carbon structures. This work provides a new paradigm for the transformation of lignin into porous carbon electrodes for future supercapacitor applications.

Low Current-Density Stable Zinc-Metal Batteries Via Aqueous/Organic Hybrid Electrolyte

Yue Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, high-proportioned polyethylene glycol was introduced as solvent in the electrolyte of zinc-metal batteries, effectively limiting the activity of free water molecules and reducing the occurrence of side reactions. The introduction of this hybrid electrolyte led to improved reversible zinc plating/stripping and cycle stability. The experimental results also demonstrated the superiority of this hybrid electrolyte in both continuous and intermittent electrochemical charge/discharge modes.

Electrochemical Zinc Ion Capacitors: Fundamentals, Materials, and Systems

Jian Yin et al.

Summary: Zinc ion capacitors (ZICs) are hybrid supercapacitors with porous carbon cathodes and zinc anodes, offering potential for safe, high-power, and low-cost energy storage. Despite the attention they have garnered, challenges remain in the form of low energy densities, limited cycling stability, and poor zinc anode stability. Future research is needed to address these challenges and improve the scalability and cost-effectiveness of ZICs for energy storage applications.

Electrochemical performance and reaction mechanism investigation of V2O5 positive electrode material for aqueous rechargeable zinc batteries

Qiang Fu et al.

Summary: The electrochemical performance and reaction mechanism of orthorhombic V2O5 in 1 M ZnSO4 aqueous electrolyte were studied. V2O5 nanowires showed an initial discharge and charge capacity at a current density of 50 mA g(-1), but experienced quick capacity fading during cycling. Interestingly, V2O5 demonstrated a higher discharge capacity at 200 mA g(-1) after 10 cycles, possibly due to different activation processes and degrees of side reactions under different current densities.
