Bamboo charcoal addition enhanced the nitrogen removal of anammox granular sludge with COD: Performance, physicochemical characteristics and microbial community

Menglei Guo et al.

Summary: The effects of different chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations on anammox granular sludge with Bamboo Charcoal (BC) addition were evaluated. The results showed that BC addition significantly increased TN removal efficiency and promoted the biological characteristics of granular sludge. High throughput sequencing and metagenomic sequencing analysis revealed the impact of BC addition on bacterial diversity and functional genes.

Influence of NaCl salinity on the aggregation performance of anammox granules

Aiyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of salinity on the aggregation and surface characteristics of Anammox granules, revealing that increased salt concentration led to a decrease in granule size, aggregation index, and extracellular protein to polysaccharide ratio. Analysis showed that higher salinity reduced zeta potential and hydrophobicity of the sludge while increasing the repulsive barrier. Additionally, changes in EPS surface groups reduced hydrophobicity of Anammox granules, but did not enhance aggregation.

High nitrogen removal performance of anaerobically treated fish processing wastewater by one-stage partial nitritation and anammox process with hydroxyapatite (HAP)-based syntrophic granules and granule structure

Yujie Chen et al.

Summary: The study successfully demonstrated high-efficiency removal of ammonium nitrogen from fish processing wastewater using a one-stage partial nitritation and anammox process with hydroxyapatite-based syntrophic granules. The dominant bacteria were Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis and Nitrosomonas, with low activity of nitrite oxidizing bacteria during treatment.

Correlation of microbial community with salinity and nitrogen removal in an anammox-based denitrification system

Myeonghwa Park et al.

Summary: The study found that high salinity inhibits Anammox microbial activity, but high nitrogen removal efficiency can still be achieved at 2% salinity. In high salinity environments, the abundance of Anammox bacteria increases, replacing heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria.

Anammox bacteria in treating ammonium rich wastewater: Recent perspective and appraisal

Chanusha Weralupitiya et al.

Summary: The discovery of the anammox process has provided an eco-friendly and low-cost means of treating ammonia-rich wastewater efficiently. However, limitations in practical applications include short doubling time and sensitivity towards nutrients and environmental alterations such as salinity and temperature. Further studies are needed to overcome these limitations and broaden the application of the anammox process.

Nano zero-valent iron improves anammox activity by promoting the activity of quorum sensing system

Zhibin Wang et al.

Summary: The addition of 50 mg/L nZVI in the anammox reactor was found to promote the removal of NH4+ and NO2-, increase the relative abundance of AnAOB, and enrich c-di-GMP in the microbial community. This enrichment of c-di-GMP reduced microbial motility and promoted the secretion of extracellular polymers, ultimately aiding the formation of sludge particles in the reactor.
