Human health and ecological risk assessment of 98 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) detected in Indian surface and wastewaters

Ashish Sengar et al.

Summary: The study conducted a screening-level risk assessment of 98 PPCPs detected in different water matrices of India, evaluating ecological risk, human health risk, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) selection risk. It found that a significant proportion of the detected PPCPs posed potential risks to aquatic species and human health in Indian waters. Special attention is needed for pharmaceutical hubs where environmental waters were severely contaminated with drug residues.

Abundance, fate, and effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in aquatic environments

Adeyemi S. Adeleye et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are commonly found in wastewater and the environment, primarily entering municipal wastewater systems through human excretion and also from hospitals, PPCPs manufacturers, and agriculture. The most abundant PPCPs in raw wastewater include analgesics, antibiotics, and stimulants. In conventional wastewater treatment plants, most removal of PPCPs occurs during secondary treatment, with an overall removal rate exceeding 90%.

Occurrence, toxicity and risk assessment of plastic additives in Besos river, Spain

Gabino Bolivar-Subirats et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the presence, seasonal variability, and impact of plastic additives in the Besos river basin in Catalonia, Spain. Only a few compounds were found to pose a small risk to the environment, mainly from WWTPs effluents and leaching from floating plastics.

Synthetic musks in surface water and fish from the rivers in India: Seasonal distribution and toxicological risk assessment

Krishnamoorthi Vimalkumar et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence and fate of synthetic musks in three major rivers in Tamil Nadu, India, finding the presence of SMs in both surface water and fish samples. Despite the low detection frequency, some rivers were contaminated with high concentrations of synthetic musks.

Essential Oils as Natural Sources of Fragrance Compounds for Cosmetics and Cosmeceuticals

Jugreet B. Sharmeen et al.

Summary: Fragrances are essential in cosmetic products, masking undesirable smells and providing benefits to the skin as preservatives and active agents. The demand for natural ingredients has led to an increased interest in plant derivatives like essential oils, with popular cosmetic companies endorsing natural fragrances. This review highlights the versatility of essential oils in cosmetics and the importance of considering authenticity and safety in their use.

Priority and emerging organic microcontaminants in three Mediterranean river basins: Occurrence, spatial distribution, and identification of river basin specific pollutants

Marianne Kock-Schulmeyer et al.

Summary: The worldwide growing use of chemicals poses potential risks to human health and ecosystems. Mediterranean rivers differ from Northern and Central European rivers in terms of hydrological regime, climate conditions, and socio-economic factors, leading to variations in pollutant categories, water quality, and environmental fate.

A simple and efficient Solid-Phase Microextraction - Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry method for the determination of fragrance materials at ultra-trace levels in water samples using multi-walled carbon nanotubes as innovative coating

N. Riboni et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated an efficient method for the simultaneous determination of fragrance materials in water samples using a novel multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-based solid-phase microextraction coating. The method achieved reliable determination of analytes at ultra-trace levels with validation results showing good precision and recovery rates. Superior enrichment factors compared to commercial fibers were also observed, demonstrating the method's applicability to real sample analysis.

Occurrence, seasonal variations, and ecological risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in River Ganges at two holy cities of India

Vineet Singh et al.

Summary: The study in the urban stretch of River Ganges in two holy cities in India found the presence of 15 different pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) with seasonal variations. The concentrations of PPCPs in the river varied, with higher levels observed in the anthropogenically influenced lower reaches at Haridwar, and overall higher concentrations in winter compared to summer. Various PPCPs showed high detection frequency in the river, with different classes of substances exhibiting different patterns of concentration variation between seasons.

A review of distribution and risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the aquatic environment in China

Ying Xiang et al.

Summary: This study reported the accumulation data of 81 PPCPs in surface water or sediment in China, selected 20 PPCPs with high frequency for ecological risk assessment, and found that certain PPCPs have relatively high pollution levels. The study also revealed that the pollution characteristics of PPCPs vary in each watershed, with some regions being more susceptible to contamination.
