Peracetic acid-based advanced oxidation processes for decontamination and disinfection of water: A review

Xiu-wei Ao et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive analysis of scientific information and experimental data on the applications of PAA-based AOPs for the removal of chemical and microbiological micropollutants from water and wastewater. Various methods of PAA activation and degradation mechanisms are discussed, along with the application of PAA for water disinfection and related mechanisms of microorganism inactivation. The review also focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of UV/PAA as an AOP compared to UV/H2O2, highlighting knowledge gaps, challenges, and new opportunities for research in this field.

Chlorine and peracetic acid in decentralized wastewater treatment: Disinfection, oxidation and odor control

Bruno de Oliveira Freitas et al.

Summary: This paper studied the application of chlorine and peracetic acid in decentralized wastewater treatment, finding that they were inefficient in reducing organic matter but effective in oxidizing sulfide and inactivating bacteria. The results provide valuable support for establishing practical guidelines for chlorine and PAA applications in Brazil.

How Much of the Total Organic Halogen and Developmental Toxicity of Chlorinated Drinking Water Might Be Attributed to Aromatic Halogenated DBPs?

Jiarui Han et al.

Summary: The study developed an effective method with ultraperformance liquid chromatography to analyze the DBP mixture from chlorination of bromide-rich raw water, separating them into aliphatic and aromatic fractions. The results showed that aromatic fractions accounted for a significant portion of the TOX and developmental toxicity in the original chlorinated water samples, indicating that the overall developmental toxicity of chlorinated water is mainly attributed to aromatic halo-DBPs with high bioconcentration potential.

Hydrogen peroxide suppresses the formation of brominated oxidation by-products in heat-activated peroxydisulfate oxidation process

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: The formation of halogenated oxidation by-products in sulfate radical based advanced oxidation process has raised concerns. Addition of hydrogen peroxide can significantly suppress the generation of halogenated-OBPs, but the formation of organic bromines is still a concern.

Peracetic Acid-Ruthenium(III) Oxidation Process for the Degradation of Micropollutants in Water

Ruobai Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated an advanced oxidation process using peracetic acid (PAA) and ruthenium(III) (Ru(III)) to oxidize micropollutants in water. The results showed that at neutral pH, the PAA-Ru(III) system efficiently removed a wide range of pharmaceuticals, with Ru(III) playing a crucial role in activating PAA for micropollutant oxidation.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2): A novel activator of peracetic acid for the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics

Jingwen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel advanced oxidation process using MoS2/PAA was applied to degrade sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), with sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the target SA. Results showed that under optimum pH conditions, the degradation efficiency of SMX exceeded 80% after 15 minutes of reaction. Increasing the dosages of PAA or MoS2 facilitated SMX degradation, while the presence of humic acids slowed down the removal of SMX.
