Microplastics change soil properties, heavy metal availability and bacterial community in a Pb-Zn-contaminated soil

Xueying Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of different types of Microplastics (MPs) on Pb-Zn contaminated soil and found that MPs, especially at a dose of 2%, decreased the richness and diversity of bacterial communities, altered microbial community composition, and significantly affected soil properties and heavy metal availability. The effects were dependent on the type and dose of MPs.

Polypropylene microplastics alter the cadmium adsorption capacity on different soil solid fractions

Xianying Ma et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) are widely present in various environmental media and have gained increasing attention globally. This study examined the adsorption characteristics of Cd in different soil solid fractions (POM, OMC, and mineral) in the presence of polypropylene (PP) MPs. The results showed that the addition of PP-MPs reduced the Cd adsorption capacity of the bulk soil, but the effects varied in different fractions. The OMC fraction was found to play a dominant role in Cd adsorption in the bulk soil. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the impact of MPs on heavy metal adsorption in soils.

Abundance and distribution characteristics of microplastic in plateau cultivated land of Yunnan Province, China

Bin Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution characteristics of microplastics in cultivated soil in Yunnan Province, revealing high levels of microplastic abundance mainly derived from plastic mulch. Various morphologies of microplastics were found in soil, and they exhibited different degrees of aging due to environmental factors. The findings emphasize the importance of paying more attention to microplastic pollution in inland soil.

Microplastics Increase Soil pH and Decrease Microbial Activities as a Function of Microplastic Shape, Polymer Type, and Exposure Time

Tingting Zhao et al.

Summary: Research on microplastic pollution in soils has shown that effects on soil pH, respiration, and enzymatic activities are influenced by microplastic shape and polymer type, with these effects changing over incubation time. Enzymatic activities fluctuate during incubation, except for N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, which shows a declining trend.

Microplastic Addition Alters the Microbial Community Structure and Stimulates Soil Carbon Dioxide Emissions in Vegetable-Growing Soil

Bo Gao et al.

Summary: The addition of microplastics significantly influences soil carbon and nitrogen cycling as well as the structure of microbial communities, leading to an increase in carbon dioxide emissions while nitrous oxide emissions remain unchanged. This study also found alterations in various chemical components and microbial community structure in soil due to the presence of microplastics.

Polyester microfiber and natural organic matter impact microbial communities, carbon-degraded enzymes, and carbon accumulation in a clayey soil

Q. Q. Guo et al.

Summary: The addition of polyester microfiber (PMF) increased the activities of soil cellulase and laccase, while natural organic matter (OM) significantly altered soil microbial communities and carbon-degraded enzyme activities. The interaction between PMF and OM increased the richness of bacterial communities in soils and on PMF, indicating potential implications for soil carbon dynamics and microbial communities affected by microplastics.

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: Laboratory technologies can artificially control aging conditions and save labor and time costs, but they cannot fully simulate the complex aging processes in the environment. The potential impacts of aging process on the risks of MPs are seemingly enhanced, including physical injury, combined toxicity with external pollutants, and chemical risk of additives and low-molecular products.

Weiwei Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that different types of microplastics have varying effects on maize growth, with high doses of PLA potentially causing strong phytotoxicity and reducing biomass. ZnO nanoparticles had minimal effects on plant growth, but led to zinc accumulation in plants and an increase in soil pH. Both microplastics and ZnO nanoparticles influenced the composition and diversity of AM fungal communities.
