Persistent free radicals in biochar enhance superoxide-mediated Fe(III)/Fe (II) cycling and the efficacy of CaO2 Fenton-like treatment

Shuqi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study developed an efficient Fenton-like system using CaO2/BC composites as oxidants and tartaric acid-chelated Fe(III) as catalysts, enhancing Fe(II) regeneration and SMX degradation. The system showed higher efficiency in utilizing O-2(center dot-) for Fe(II) regeneration and enhancing SMX degradation. Positive correlation was found between SMX degradation rates and EPR signal intensities of biochar-derived persistent free radicals in CaO2/BC.

Fe/Fe3C Boosts H2O2 Utilization for Methane Conversion Overwhelming O2 Generation

Yicheng Xing et al.

Summary: By fabricating heterogeneous Fenton-type Fe-based catalysts containing Fe-N-x sites and Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles, the competition between the efficient utilization of H2O2 and undesired O-2 generation was studied. With finely tuned active sites, a high conversion rate for the selective oxidation of methane and excellent product selectivity were achieved, while O-2 generation was significantly suppressed.

Ascorbate guided conversion of hydrogen peroxide to hydroxyl radical on goethite

Xiaobing Wang et al.

Summary: The addition of ascorbate reduces the conversion of H2O2 to O-2 and increases the conversion to (OH)-O-center dot on goethite. This is due to the efficient Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle accelerated by ascorbate, resulting in abundant Fe(II) on the goethite surface favoring the conversion of H2O2 to (OH)-O-center dot. Meanwhile, decreased surface Fe(III) inhibits the conversion of H2O2 to O-2.

Calcium superphosphate as an inorganic stabilizer for modified-Fenton treatment of diesel-contaminated soil with two different exogenous iron sources

Jiaolong Qin et al.

Summary: The study showed that the use of CAP stabilizer in the H2O2 treatment with two exogenous iron species can extend the lifetime of H2O2 in soil and enhance diesel removal efficiency. Specifically, the diesel removal efficiency in the IC based process was significantly higher than that in the IB based process.

Quantification of photocatalytically-generated hydrogen peroxide in the presence of organic electron donors: Interference and reliability considerations

Yan Wei et al.

Summary: This study compared different methods for quantifying H2O2 and considered interference by representative organic compounds, based on their electron-donating and electron-accepting abilities. Selecting the appropriate H2O2 quantification method is crucial for different water matrices treated by Fenton-like reactions.

Hydrogen peroxide decomposition into oxygen in different soils: Kinetic analysis, mechanism and implication in catalyzed hydrogen peroxide propagations

Hamed Vafaei Molamahmood et al.

Summary: Rapid hydrogen peroxide decomposition in soils poses a major obstacle to catalyzed H2O2 propagation for soil and groundwater remediation, and O-2 production kinetics are more valuable for evaluating H2O2 utilization. The kinetic constant of O-2 production (k(O2)) in soils is correlated with the contents of manganese, iron, and inorganic carbon, with manganese mineral being the dominant factor. Acid-washing can suppress O-2 production, while phosphate addition is not ideal for highly active soils.
