Design and thermo-economic evaluation of an integrated concentrated solar power-Desalination tri-generation system

Rachid Klaimi et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a CSP tri-generation system that can produce steam, power, and freshwater simultaneously, utilizing solar energy for sustainable operation of large scale desalination systems. The proposed model offers a convenient and eco-friendly route for steam, power, and water production, with significant cost savings achieved through large scale production and optimal feedwater salinity. The system also allows for exporting electrical energy to the grid, with breakeven energy prices varying based on feedwater salinity.

Biohythane production from organic waste: Recent advancements, technical bottlenecks and prospects

Sabarathinam Shanmugam et al.

Summary: Biohythane, a blend of hydrogen with methane, is produced through the breakdown of organic substrates using sequential dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion. Improving its production rate and quality can be achieved by altering microbial consortium, substrate selection, reactor design, and implementing a two-stage fermentation system. Comparative studies show the superiority of biohythane over other biofuels.

Multi-chronological hierarchical clustering to solve capacity expansion problems with renewable sources

R. Dominguez et al.

Summary: Renewable sources are increasingly integrated into power systems for decarbonization, but their variability introduces uncertainty, requiring fast generating and storage units. Adequate representation of renewable variability in capacity expansion problems is crucial, often selected through clustering techniques. Trade-offs exist in current clustering algorithms, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to accurately capture inter-temporal correlation and representativeness with minimal clusters.

Loiy Al-Ghussain et al.

Summary: This study determines the optimal size of a PV/wind/biomass hybrid system with and without energy storage, based on increasing the demand-supply fraction and renewable energy fraction. The proposed system, implemented at the Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus, achieves 99.59% FR, 98.86% DSF, and a cost of electricity of 0.1626 $/kWh. The simulations show that the system ensures high autonomy approaching 99%, and excess energy can be allocated towards meeting the campus's thermal and hot water demands.
