An audit of microplastic abundance throughout three Australian wastewater treatment plants

Shima Ziajahromi et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are important pathways for microplastics to enter the environment, with the majority of microplastics retained in sludge. Limited information on microplastics in Australian sludge and biosolids warrants further research. This study shows that most microplastics are intercepted and transported to landfills during the treatment process, making landfills potential important sinks (and future sources) of microplastics.

A comprehensive review on assessment of plastic debris in aquatic environment and its prevalence in fishes and other aquatic animals in India

Ishrat Vasi Shaikh et al.

Summary: The presence of micro, macro, and mesoplastics in aquatic environments poses potential risks to aquatic and human life due to their harmful ecological effects. Research in India on plastic debris is scarce, especially in freshwater environments, fish, and other aquatic animals, with a lack of toxicological studies on various life forms, including humans. The review fills a knowledge gap and provides guidance for future research in India.

Sub- and supercritical water for chemical recycling of polyethylene terephthalate waste

Maja Colnik et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the chemical recycling of PET waste using sub- and supercritical water. The results show that high-purity terephthalic acid (TPA) can be obtained under specific conditions, while the formation of secondary products was also detected.

A review on the characteristics of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants: A source for toxic chemicals

Amir Hossein Hamidian et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are a significant source of microplastics discharged into the environment, with their characteristics in different environmental matrices still largely unknown. Most microplastics in water samples are composed of PET, PS, PP, and PE, with a significant proportion being removed during primary and secondary treatment stages, and MBR being the most efficient tertiary treatment technology. The majority of microplastics removed during wastewater treatment end up in sewage sludge and are released into the environment via sludge applications.

Removal and generation of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants: A review

Zhenjia Xu et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the generation process, removal efficiency, and impact of sludge treatment on microplastics in wastewater treatment plants, indicating that the average removal efficiency of MPs is less than 90%, and the removal is affected by the choice of wastewater treatment process and the properties of MPs.

Occurrence and removal of microplastics from wastewater treatment plants in a typical tourist city in China

Lishan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastic content decreased significantly during the treatment process in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), but still widely existed in influent, effluent, and sludge. Fibers were the predominant type of microplastics, and the tertiary industry was identified as the main contributor of microplastics to WWTPs.
