Human health risk assessment for toxic elements in the extreme ambient dust conditions observed in Sistan, Iran

Reza Dahmardeh Behrooz et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the bioaccessibility and health risks related to heavy metals and metalloid in airborne dust samples in Zabol, Iran. The results showed high carcinogenic risks associated with inhalation exposure for both children and adults, as well as elevated risks for ingestion and dermal contact pathways, particularly for children. The study highlights the significant health risks posed by toxic elements in airborne particles in Sistan and suggests the need for measures to reduce exposure and protect public health.

Dust storms in Iran - Distribution, causes, frequencies and impacts

A. Rashki et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent work on the distribution of dust storms in Iran, revealing that the dust events affecting Iran come from both within the country and from sources outside its boundaries. The paper discusses the transport pathways of dust material, associated synoptic conditions, recent changes in dust storm frequencies, and the economic and societal consequences of dust storms in Iran.

Microplastic abundance and distribution in a Central Asian desert

Feng Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the amount of microplastics in the Badain Jaran Desert is relatively high, mainly originating from populated areas southeast of the desert and transported long distances through atmospheric deposition. The tourism zone of the desert had a higher concentration of microplastics compared to the non-tourism zone, suggesting a potential contribution from tourism activities.

Potential human health risks due to environmental exposure to nano-and microplastics and knowledge gaps: A scoping review

Arifur Rahman et al.

Summary: Microplastics are an emerging global environmental contaminant that may have negative impacts on human health through various pathways such as metabolic disturbances, neurotoxicity, and increased cancer risk. Currently, little is known about the effects of microplastics on human health, and further research is needed to quantify their impacts and pathogenesis.

Microplastics in the Lut and Kavir Deserts, Iran

Sajjad Abbasi et al.

Summary: This study isolated microplastics from soils collected from the Kavir and Lut Deserts on the Iranian plateau, with most of them having a fibrous nature and being composed of polyethylene terephthalate and Nylon. The majority of microplastics are likely brought into these desert environments from distant sources via wind, undergoing rapid transport, internal recycling, as well as significant photo-oxidation and mechanical weathering.

Investigation of the 2018 Shiraz dust event: Potential sources of metals, rare earth elements, and radionuclides; health assessment

Sajjad Abbasi et al.

Summary: In May 2018, an unprecedented dust storm in Shiraz was found to be mainly influenced by air masses from Saudi Arabian deserts. The dust settled in Shiraz showed similarities with shale, sandstone, and Saudi Arabian soils, indicating their sources. High concentrations of toxic elements and rare earth elements in the dust were attributed to emissions from industrial activities and exhausts. The risk assessment revealed higher health risks for children compared to adults, with different pathways showing varying levels of risk.

Dry and wet deposition of microplastics in a semi-arid region (Shiraz, Iran)

Sajjad Abbasi et al.

Summary: Microplastics were found in settled dusts and rainfall collected in Shiraz and Mount Derak, Iran, with a majority of fibrous nature and polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate being the most abundant polymers. The study showed higher deposition of microplastics during dry months and suggested distal sources of microplastics carried by air masses from the north and west. Additionally, the research adds to the evidence of the global ubiquity and long-range transport of microplastics in the atmosphere.
