Fate and Fathead Minnow Embryotoxicity of Weathering Crude Oil in a Pilot-Scale Spill Tank

Lara R. Lara-Jacobo et al.

Summary: This study assessed the toxicity of mixed sweet blend crude oil to fish embryos after weathering for 28 days in different temperature conditions. The results showed that malformation occurrence in fish embryos was concentration-dependent on unidentified oxidized organic compounds detected in the contaminated water during the weathering process.

Occurrence and characterisation of naphthenic acid fraction components in oil residues and sediments stranded on the shoreline of Chedabucto Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada

Zeyu Yang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the occurrence, fate, and behaviour of oil components 45 years post-spill by analysing polar naphthenic acid fraction components (NAFCs) through high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS). Results showed that NAFCs in oil residues were mainly composed of oxygen species, while environmental sediment samples contained a dominant biological composition. Site-specific environmental conditions played a major role in controlling the fate and behaviour of oil components, including NAFCs.
