Small Molecular Fluorescent Probes for Imaging of Viscosity in Living Biosystems

Haibin Xiao et al.

Summary: Viscosity, as a crucial microenvironment parameter, is closely connected to various cellular processes and diseases. The visualization of viscosity has gained increasing interest in recent years, leading to the development of new fluorescence probes for mapping viscosity inside living organisms. This review comprehensively summarizes viscosity-sensitive small molecular fluorescent probes used in bioimaging, with a focus on the past three years, while also discussing the current challenges and opportunities for developing viscosity-specific fluorescent probes.

The Role of Chain Length in Cucurbit[8]uril Complexation of Methyl Alkyl Viologens

Alessandro Pedrini et al.

Summary: The study shows that as the alkyl chain length increases from 12 carbon atoms to 16 carbon atoms, the binding mode of viologens with cucurbit[8]uril in water switches from a 1:1 to 2:1 host/guest stoichiometry. This is due to the folding of the major portion of the longer alkyl chain in one CB[8] cavity and the inclusion of the full viologen unit by another host molecule.

Methyl Hexadecyl Viologen Inclusion in Cucurbit[8]uril: Coexistence of Three Host-Guest Complexes with Different Stoichiometry in a Highly Hydrated Crystal

Neal Hickey et al.

Summary: The host-guest inclusion complexes of cucurbiturils with alkyl viologen exhibit various combinations in crystal structures, showcasing complex and interesting architectures. The coexistence of different stoichiometries in the crystal reveals the impact of packing effects on supramolecular complexes.

Fluorescence visualization of cucurbit[8]uriltriggered dynamic host-guest assemblies

Xiaodong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explores the host-guest interactions of cucurbit[8]uril with pi-conjugated bispyridinium guests in aqueous solution, resulting in a series of dynamic assemblies distinguishable by naked-eye observation and quantitative fluorescence emissions. The dissociation and control of host-stabilized charge-transfer interactions by N-substituted alkyl chains on cationic guests led to the discovery of new possible binding modes for the cucurbit[8]uril host.
