Fabrication, microstructure and optical characterizations of holmium oxide (Ho2O3) transparent ceramics

Dianjun Hu et al.

Summary: The researchers successfully fabricated Ho2O3 transparent ceramics with excellent optical properties, featuring an average grain size of 0.77 µm and in-line transmittances of 80.7 % at 1550 nm and 76.7 % at 1064 nm. The ceramics also exhibit large Verdet constants, making them promising for magneto-optical devices in various laser applications.

Summary: In this study, the influence of Ag@ZrO2 nanocomposites on glass properties was investigated. It was found that doping 3% Ag/ZrO2 significantly enhanced SPR effect, hardness, nonlinear refractive index, and Verdet constant in the glass, making it more suitable for magneto optical, nonlinear, and photonic applications.

C-Term Faraday Rotation in Metallocene Containing Thin Films

Leo Delage-Laurin et al.

Summary: The study focused on the Faraday effect in thin films of decamethylferrocenium/poly(methyl methacrylate) composites, revealing their superior performance in near-infrared Faraday rotation with larger Verdet constants compared to commercially used NIR inorganic Faraday rotators. This paves the way for the development of high-performance metallocene-based Faraday rotators.

Large Faraday Rotation in Optical-Quality Phthalocyanine and Porphyrin Thin Films

Zachary Nelson et al.

Summary: Faraday rotation is a magneto-optical phenomenon involving the rotation of plane-polarized light in the presence of an external magnetic field. Recent studies have shown that organic thin films made of polymeric and small-molecule chromophores exhibit Verdet constants exceeding those found in conventional inorganic crystals. In this study, thin-film magnetic circular birefringence spectra and maximum Verdet constants of several phthalocyanine and porphyrin derivatives were reported, demonstrating their potential for applications requiring large Verdet constants and high optical quality.

Manufacture and Faraday magneto-optical effect of highly transparent novel holmium aluminum garnet ceramics

Mengyao Wang et al.

Summary: A novel transparent magneto-optical holmium aluminum garnet (HoAG) ceramic with high transmittance and infrared cut-off properties was successfully fabricated by a facile co-precipitation strategy. The addition of a silica sintering aid promoted densification during sintering process. The ceramic exhibited excellent magneto-optical properties and thermal conductivity.

Polymer-Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles as Ultrahigh Verdet Constant Materials: Correlation of Nanoparticle Size with Magnetic and Magneto-Optical Properties

Kyle J. Carothers et al.

Summary: This report demonstrates the use of polymer-coated magnetic cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) to achieve ultrahigh Verdet constant materials with significantly greater Verdet constants than traditional inorganic garnets. The polymer coating on magnetic NPs enables excellent colloidal dispersion and allows for solution or melt processing into thin films. Varying sizes of CoNPs also enable structure-property correlations previously unexplored.

Fiber Optic Sensors Based on the Faraday Effect

Pedja Mihailovic et al.

Summary: The Faraday effect-based fiber optic sensor offers advantages in measuring high voltage currents and performance, with potential applications in future smart grids. Developments in optical telecommunication technology have alleviated difficulties in designing and manufacturing FOS, providing impetus to magnetometry based on the Faraday effect. However, challenges remain in implementing solutions and improving performance.
