Exogenous exposure to dihydroxyacetone mimics high fructose induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction

Raj Mehta et al.

Summary: DHA is a three-carbon sugar found in sunless tanning products and e-cigarettes, with potential health risks including metabolic imbalance and cellular stress. Exposures to DHA mimic effects of fructose exposure, highlighting the need for further investigation into the health consequences of DHA exposure.

Cytotoxic, genotoxic, and toxicogenomic effects of dihydroxyacetone in human primary keratinocytes

Anneliese Striz et al.

Summary: The study investigated the potential toxicological effects of DHA on human epidermal keratinocytes in vitro. Results showed that DHA was cytotoxic to primary keratinocytes above 25 mM, with genotoxicity only detected at cytotoxic concentrations, indicating non-biologically relevant DNA damage. Subtoxic doses of DHA induced gene expression changes and glycation in the cells. More research is needed to fully understand the biological effects of DHA on human skin.

Hyperpolarized Dihydroxyacetone Is a Sensitive Probe of Hepatic Gluconeogenic State

Mukundan Ragavan et al.

Summary: Type II diabetes and pre-diabetes are common in adults and are often treated by targeting hepatic gluconeogenesis. Direct measurement of hepatic gluconeogenic capacity is difficult, but the study successfully used hyperpolarized [2-C-13]dihydroxyacetone (DHA) to detect changes in gluconeogenic potential. Using ex vivo perfused mouse livers, the study confirmed that the ratio of signal intensities of 6C to 3C in C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra is sensitive to hepatic gluconeogenic state.
