Reactor modelling and design for sorption enhanced dimethyl ether synthesis

Simone Guffanti et al.

Summary: SEDMES is a promising option to overcome the thermodynamic limitations of conventional DME production processes. The validated model studied the effects of different operating parameters on the thermal behavior and DME yield performances of the reactor. The results show that SEDMES is poorly sensitive to the CO/CO2 ratio and provides larger advantages with increasing CO2 content in the feed.

Model Analysis of the Role of Kinetics, Adsorption Capacity, and Heat and Mass Transfer Effects in Sorption Enhanced Dimethyl Ether Synthesis

Simone Guffanti et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of kinetics, adsorption capacity, and heat and mass transfer effects in the sorption enhanced dimethyl ether synthesis (SEDMES) through a model of an industrial-scale, externally cooled, multitubular reactor. It shows that the adsorbent/catalyst weight ratio affects the balance between DME productivity and yield, and highlights the significant impact of internal diffusion on effective reaction rates. Additionally, the thermal effects in the reactor under intensified SEDMES process conditions are addressed.

High Temperature Water Permeable Membrane Reactors for CO2 Utilization

Zhan Li et al.

Summary: Converting CO2 to valuable chemicals via catalytic CO2 hydrogenation is promising, but the challenge of water separation at high temperatures remains. Employing a water permeable membrane reactor can enhance CO2 conversion and protect the catalyst, yet developing high-performance membranes for this application is a technical hurdle to overcome.

Neutron Insights into Sorption Enhanced Methanol Catalysis

Marin Nikolic et al.

Summary: Sorption enhanced methanol production utilizes the equilibrium shift of the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, leading to desired products, but the complexity of the catalyst system generates additional reactions and side products like dimethyl ether. The high concentration of intermediates and products in the sorbent allows for the use of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopy. The INS data revealed changes in the reaction path during sorption catalysis, particularly influenced by varying water partial pressures due to zeolite sorbent adsorption saturation.

Sorption enhanced dimethyl ether synthesis under industrially relevant conditions: experimental validation of pressure swing regeneration

Jasper van Kampen et al.

Summary: Dimethyl ether (DME) is a promising alternative fuel solution, and Sorption enhanced DME synthesis (SEDMES) combines heterogeneous catalysis with in situ water adsorption, providing a potential strategy for the direct production of DME from CO2. Pressure swing regeneration has shown high performance with over 80% single-pass carbon selectivity to DME, increasing productivity and allowing for further optimization. The experimental confirmation in this study reveals the full potential of the SEDMES technology in efficiently utilizing carbon and hydrogen.
