A Direct Numerical Simulation Investigation of the One-Phase Flow in a Simplified Emulsification Device

Peyman Olad et al.

Summary: A more detailed investigation of the flow inside emulsification devices, such as High-pressure homogenizers (HPHs), helps to broaden the fundamental understanding of these machines and increase the efficiency of emulsification processes. Due to the high computational cost and time, direct numerical simulation (DNS) is not considered practical in the industry. This study presents the first DNS carried out on a model of an emulsification device, aiming to set a benchmark for future CFD investigations using industrially favorable tools.

Does Cavitation Affect Droplet Breakup in High-Pressure Homogenization? Insights into Local Effects

Felix Johannes Preiss et al.

Summary: Using high-speed camera and laser-induced luminescence technology, droplet breakup in a cavitating flow of a high-pressure homogenizer orifice was visualized, with larger droplets observed downstream in the final product once jet cavitation regime was reached.
