Heteroatom doping in metal-free carbonaceous materials for the enhancement of persulfate activation

Shiyu Liu et al.

Summary: Metal-free carbonaceous materials doped with heteroatoms have been shown to enhance PS activation through reinforcing radical and non-radical pathways, but the relationship between doped heteroatoms and catalytic activity is still not completely understood. This review discusses the preparation methods, characterization techniques, performance improvement, and catalytic mechanisms of heteroatom-doped metal-free carbonaceous materials in PS activation processes. Understanding the mechanism enhanced by heteroatom doping can guide the synthesis of metal-free carbonaceous materials for better practical applications.

Theoretical and experimental insights into the mechanisms of C6/C6 PFPiA degradation by dielectric barrier discharge plasma

Zhuo Gao et al.

Summary: C6/C6 PFPiA degradation in the DBD plasma system is mainly attributed to attacks by center dot OH, center dot O2-, and 1O2, with a higher discharge voltage and alkaline conditions favoring degradation. The degradation process involves stepwise losing CF2, free radical polymerization, and C-C bond cleavage. Furthermore, the DBD plasma treatment process reduces the toxicity of C6/C6 PFPiA to some extent.

Multiprocess catalyzed Cu-EDTA decomplexation by non-thermal plasma coupled with Fe/C microelectrolysis: Reaction process and mechanisms

Yue Liu et al.

Summary: Through the novel strategy of plasma + iron, there were distinct synergistic effects on Cu-EDTA decomplexation, resulting in improved efficiency and energy efficiency compared to the single plasma system. Iron powder accelerated the decomposition of H2O2 and formation of center dot OH, mitigating the negative effects of radical quenchers. Co-precipitation with polymeric iron further promoted the removal of released Cu ions, leading to the identification of various organic compounds as byproducts of effective Cu-EDTA decomplexation.

A review on non-thermal plasma treatment of water contaminated with antibiotics

M. Magureanu et al.

Summary: Large amounts of antibiotics are being produced and consumed globally, leading to significant water contamination due to inefficient wastewater treatment. The high concentrations of antibiotics in the environment exert selective pressure on clinically important bacteria, increasing resistance prevalence. Efforts to improve contaminated wastewater treatment are essential in order to reduce uncontrollable spread of antibiotic resistance, as a drastic reduction in antibiotic use is not anticipated. This review paper analyzes recent progress on using non-thermal plasma technology to degrade antibiotics in water, discussing removal efficiency, energy efficiency, and degradation pathways for various classes of antibiotics. Ways to enhance the efficiency of the plasma process are also addressed.
