Environmental source, fate, and toxicity of microplastics

Chunhui Wang et al.

Summary: Microplastics, small plastic particles less than 5 mm in size, have attracted increasing global attention due to their widespread distribution in various environmental compartments. Studies show that the sources of microplastics are diverse, and their presence and impacts in the environment are influenced by multiple factors. Research gaps exist in quantitatively analyzing different exposure routes of microplastics and their toxicity to organisms. Further efforts are needed to focus on the occurrence and fate of microplastics in terrestrial environments, especially in the atmosphere and soil, as well as investigating the toxicity mechanisms of microplastics.

An assessment of attitudes towards plastics and bioplastics in Europe

Walter Leal Filho et al.

Summary: Over the last 50 years, the production of plastics has significantly increased, with packaging being the most common way of plastic use. The majority of people are aware of the impact of plastic waste on the environment and health, and though there is a positive attitude towards bioplastics, limited availability and lack of information hinder wider use.

Progress in quantitative analysis of microplastics in the environment: A review

Sungyup Jung et al.

Summary: The increase in plastics released into the environment has raised concerns, with current spectroscopic tools being the main method for identifying and measuring microplastics. However, accuracy decreases as particle size decreases. The emergence of pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Pyro-GC/MS) technology provides a new method for the identification and quantification of microplastics.

Drinking plastics? - Quantification and qualification of microplastics in drinking water distribution systems by mu FTIR and Py-GCMS

Inga V. Kirstein et al.

Summary: The concentrations of microplastics in potable water are debated, likely due to variations in water quality, quantification methods, and analytical standards. Reliable methods for assessing microplastics in drinking water are lacking, but proper assessment requires quality assurance, adequate volume assessment, and understanding of analytical method differences. The study used validated techniques to assess microplastics in drinking water distribution systems and found low contents, suggesting low risk to human health.

Removal of microplastics from aqueous solutions by magnetic carbon nanotubes

Ye Tang et al.

Summary: This study synthesized magnetic carbon nanotubes (M-CNTs) as adsorbates for the efficient removal of microplastics. The M-CNTs were able to effectively adsorb various types of microplastics and could be easily separated by magnetic force. Additionally, the adsorbed M-CNTs showed potential for recycling and maintained high removal capacity after multiple uses.

Lifetime Accumulation of Microplastic in Children and Adults

Nur Hazimah Mohamed Nor et al.

Summary: The study presents a probabilistic lifetime exposure model for microplastics that considers intake through various pathways, simulating concentrations in different parts of the body and validating against empirical data. Results indicate a small contribution of microplastics to overall chemical intake. Future research should focus on exploring the contributions of other food types to microplastic exposure.

Aging effects on low- and high-density polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene under UV irradiation: An insight into decomposition mechanism by Py-GC/MS for microplastic analysis

Nina Maria Ainali et al.

Summary: The study investigated the aging characteristics of four commonly used polymers under UV irradiation and provided insight into the impact of UV exposure on the physical and chemical properties of the polymers. Various analytical methods revealed the significant effects of UV irradiation on the crystalline and thermal properties of the polymers, as well as the formation of new functional groups. It was also found that UV exposure altered the ratio of low molecular weight compounds to higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and impacted the reliability of microplastic quantification in real samples.

Summary: This article reports a solvated chromogenic carbon dots with luminescence exhibiting a regular redshift in various solvents, which is attributed to the linking of CD surfaces to solvents through hydrogen bonds, leading to different surface level states and energy resonance transfer efficiencies. CDs/B2O3 composite shows excellent fluorescence thermal stability and has the potential for manufacturing white-light-emitting devices with a high color rendering index, while the solvation effects of CDs have prospects in detecting water content in organic solvents. Additionally, CDs are applied in cell imaging and positioning, showing significant prospects in biological fields.
