Determination on the activity of formed CaSO4 for arsenic adsorption during arsenic capture by CaO with the presence of SO2: Experimental and density functional theory study

Xiaoyu Li et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical studies showed that SO2 significantly inhibited the arsenic adsorption by CaO, primarily due to plugging and sulfation effects. Theoretical calculations also revealed the relatively weaker activity of CaSO4 compared to CaO in arsenic adsorption.

Fabrication of Al2O3/CaO with anti-sintering for efficient removal of As2O3 in simulated flue gas: Experimental and DFT study

Jiandong Hong et al.

Summary: In this study, an anti-sintering Al2O3/CaO sorbent was synthesized and applied for the adsorption of As2O3, showing improved performance compared to untreated CaO due to enhanced anti-sintering ability with the addition of Al2O3. The adsorption mechanism of As2O3 on Al2O3/CaO was proposed based on experimental and theoretical analysis, with the Al site identified as the main adsorption active site and electron transfer channel.

Fate of chromium with the presence of HCl and steam during oxy-coal combustion: Quantum chemistry and experimental study

Xiaoyu Li et al.

Summary: Combining quantum chemistry, kinetic simulations, and DTF experiments, the research revealed the transformation behavior of chromium under oxy-coal combustion in the presence of steam and HCl. It was found that HCl promoted the oxidation of chromium to hexavalent CrO2Cl2, while the coexistence of HCl and steam divided the transition of chromium into two stages, ultimately leading to the formation of CrO2Cl2 as the predominant species. The introduction of HCl into the combustion atmosphere induced more chromium release, and the presence of steam reinforced the effect of HCl on chromium transformation.

Performance study on Ca-based sorbents for sequential CO2 and SO2 capture in a bubbling fluidised bed

Zhenghui Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that the SO2 absorption capacity of natural limestone after 20 cycles of CO2 capture was slightly lower than that of synthetic composite pellets. Abrasion was observed to be the main mode of attrition during the capture process, but some agglomeration was also found with increasing number of cycles, potentially posing a concern for the use of Ca-based sorbents in CO2 or SO2 fluidised bed capture.

Attrition performance and morphology of limestone under different conditions in fluidized bed

Miao Miao et al.

Summary: The study found that the attrition rate of finer limestone is higher than that of coarser limestone, and the limestone has the largest attrition rate in air atmosphere, while far less in SO2 atmosphere, mainly due to the formation of CaSO4 layer. The simultaneous reaction of sulfation and calcination affects the attrition rate and morphology of limestone.

The adsorption mechanisms of Hg0 on marcasite-type metal selenides: The influences of metal-terminated site

Hailong Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the immobilization mechanisms of elemental mercury on marcasite-type metal selenides based on density functional theory, finding that the adsorptions of Hg-0 at metal sites are mainly influenced by the 4p orbitals of metal atoms, while interactions at Se sites are affected by both the 5s and 4p orbitals of Se atoms. The influences of metal-terminated sites on Hg-0 adsorptions at Se sites are relatively limited.

Deep insight into the effect of NaCl/HCl/SO2/CO2 in simulated flue gas on gas-phase arsenic adsorption over mineral oxide sorbents

Shenghui Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that different mineral oxide sorbents have varying effects on gas-phase arsenic adsorption, with NaCl promoting or inhibiting the arsenic adsorption efficiency of different sorbents. Acid gases also have different inhibitory effects on the adsorption, with the order of inhibition intensity being HCl > SO2 > CO2 at 700 degrees C.

The key roles of Fe-bearing minerals on arsenic capture and speciation transformation during high-As bituminous coal combustion: Experimental and theoretical investigations

Biao Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the speciation of arsenic in fly ash derived from high-arsenic bituminous coal combustion, with a focus on the role of key ash components. Fe minerals were found to be crucial in capturing and oxidizing As3+ into solid phase, while magnetite enhanced arsenic enrichment in fly ash. Density functional theory suggested that the octahedral structure on Fe3O4 (111) surface may be strong active sites for arsenic adsorption. These findings have implications for developing effective techniques for arsenic removal.

Migration and transformation of lead species over CaO surface in municipal solid waste incineration fly Ash: A DFT study

Qiang Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, the migration and transformation mechanisms of lead species over the CaO (100) surface were investigated using density functional theory calculations. The results show that CaO can accelerate the chlorination of Pb-0 to PbCl2, promoting lead enrichment in fly ash for purification.

A deep insight into the role of O2 on As2O3 capture over γ-Al2O3 sorbent: Experimental and DFT study

Jiaying Xing et al.

Summary: Adsorption experiments on As2O3 on gamma-Al2O3 surfaces showed that O-2 concentration and temperature have significant effects, with As(V) being the primary adsorption product at high temperatures. Density functional theory calculations revealed the adsorption mechanism, showing stronger adsorption ability on O-2/gamma-Al2O3 surfaces and a distinction between strong chemical adsorption and physical adsorption. Additionally, thermodynamic analysis indicated chemical adsorption at 573-1073 K with decreasing stability at higher temperatures. Overall, the role of O-2 on As2O3 capture and potential control strategies for arsenic emissions were elucidated through experimental and simulation results.

The influences of selenium species on mercury removal over pyrite surface: A density functional theory study

Wenqi Qu et al.

Summary: This study calculated the co-adsorption of Hg0 and selenium species on pyrite surface using DFT, and found that selenium species play an important role in Hg0 adsorption. The effect of SeO2 on Hg0 adsorption depends on its concentration, with low concentrations producing coordination-absent active sites beneficial for mercury elimination.

Insight into As2O3 adsorption characteristics by mineral oxide sorbents: Experimental and DFT study

Shenghui Yu et al.

Summary: Arsenic (As) in coal is mainly converted into As2O3 vapor during combustion. Mineral oxides such as CaO, MgO, and Al2O3 are effective sorbents for controlling As2O3 emissions. Experimental results show that CaO is an excellent sorbent for As2O3, and the adsorption efficiency of CaO, MgO, and Al2O3 improves with increasing temperature.
