Unravelling the pathways of air plasma induced aflatoxin B1 degradation and detoxification

Natasa Hojnik et al.

Summary: Aflatoxins, particularly AFB(1), are a major dietary risk factor for humans, with the WHO identifying it as a potent carcinogen. This study demonstrates an efficient targeted degradation of AFB(1) using non-equilibrium plasma, with detailed mechanisms elucidated through sensitive analytical methods. The approach not only renders AFB(1) harmless in a short amount of time, but also outperforms other non-thermal methods like UV irradiation.

Targeting mitochondrial metabolite transporters in Penicillium expansum for reducing patulin production

Vincenzo Tragni et al.

Summary: There is a growing need for alternative treatments to control fungal infections and mycotoxin accumulation in fruits and vegetables. Mitochondrial proteins are a promising target for new antifungal treatments, and patulin, a commonly studied mycotoxin, has toxic effects on various biological systems. Controlling patulin production through inhibition of mitochondrial/peroxisome transporters involved in acetyl-CoA precursor export may be a potential strategy.

Degradation of Deoxynivalenol by Atmospheric-Pressure Cold Plasma and Sequential Treatments with Heat and UV Light

Ehsan Feizollahi et al.

Summary: Atmospheric-pressure cold plasma (ACP) technology has the potential to degrade deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin found in grains, with 100% degradation achieved in solution form. Sequential treatments involving ACP with heat or light-emitting diode (LED) can effectively reduce DON concentrations in dry form.

Subcellular mechanism of microbial inactivation during water disinfection by cold atmospheric-pressure plasma

Hangbo Xu et al.

Summary: This study revealed the subcellular mechanism of yeast cell inactivation during plasma-liquid interaction in terms of various factors. Results showed that plasma mainly inactivated yeast cells through damaging cell membrane, intracellular redox and ion homeostasis, and energy metabolism, as well as causing DNA fragmentation. The role of different antimicrobial factors in plasma sterilization was investigated, with center dot OH and O-12 contributing most to yeast inactivation.
