Investigation of Fe(II) and Mn(II) involved anoxic denitrification in agricultural soils with high manganese and iron contents

Baokun Xu et al.

Summary: The study showed that Mn(II) and Fe(II) can act as electron donors in denitrification process in paddy soils with high Mn and Fe contents, with coupling of denitrification and Mn(II) or Fe(II) oxidation in some locations. However, in upland fields, despite high Mn and Fe contents, the roles and contributions of Mn(II) and Fe(II) to denitrification were not significant.

A review of the biotransformations of priority pharmaceuticals in biological wastewater treatment processes

P. Y. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the biotransformations of key pharmaceutical compounds (PhACs) in biological wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) processes, highlighting their importance in removing PhACs from WWTP effluents. Critically assessing the biodegradation of 7 relevant PhACs on the EU Watch list, the review also discusses the impact of relevant factors on biological WWTP processes. Promising technologies and operational strategies for controlling PhAC releases are emphasized, along with suggestions for future research needs.

Characterization and mechanism of Mn(II)-based mixotrophic denitrifying bacterium (Cupriavidus sp. HY129) in remediation of nitrate (NO3--N) and manganese (Mn(II)) contaminated groundwater

Yihan Bai et al.

Summary: A novel denitrifying and manganese-oxidizing strain HY129, identified as Cupriavidus sp. HY129, showed high removal efficiency for nitrate and Mn(II) pollution in groundwater. The Mn(II) removal process may be enhanced by extracellular adsorption of Mn(II) via protein in extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). Further molecular biology analyses confirmed the mechanisms of Mn(II) oxidation by strain HY129.

A review on the role of plant in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) removal in constructed wetlands

Xiaojin Hu et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands show good removal performance for PPCPs through the combined processes of substrates, plants, and microorganisms. This review summarizes the direct and indirect roles of wetland plants in PPCP removal, with indirect effects appearing more significant. Wetland plants can enhance PPCP removal through improved rhizosphere microbial activities and the formation of supramolecular ensembles with humic acids, improving efficiency by up to four times.

Removal of micropollutants and biological effects by conventional and intensified constructed wetlands treating municipal wastewater

Nadine A. Sossalla et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that intensified treatment wetlands have higher removal efficiency for micropollutants and mixture effects compared to conventional (non-aerated) HF wetlands, and in some cases, even outperformed the WWTP. The two-stage wetland system showed the most significant removal efficacy for all biological effects.

Removal of diclofenac from wastewater: A comprehensive review of detection, characteristics and tertiary treatment techniques

Ingridy Alessandretti et al.

Summary: The increase in diclofenac consumption and its incorrect disposal have led to the detection of this contaminant in water resources. Various methods such as adsorption, membrane separation, and advanced oxidation processes are effective in removing diclofenac but face limitations. Integration of technologies can overcome these limitations and positively impact the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
