Retention of strontium in high- & low-pH cementitious matrices - OPC vs. model systems

Matan E. Shiner et al.

Summary: The study aims to identify the phases controlling strontium immobilization in Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) matrices. Experimental results show that OPC pastes exhibit better strontium retention compared to model systems, suggesting that minor phases (such as ettringite and AFm) can improve strontium retention.

Revealing crucial effects of temperature and salinization on swelling behavior of montmorillonite

Jiapei Du et al.

Summary: The research investigates the swelling mechanism of montmorillonite under different salt solutions and temperatures, showing that the correlation between swelling pressure and temperature is determined by hydration energy and hydration state. The critical temperature for this correlation coincides with the hydration state saltation temperature identified from radial distribution function, indicating a joint control of hydration energy and interlayer cations' hydration state on the swelling of montmorillonite.

Role of intercalated water in calcium hydroxide interlayers for carbonation reaction

Ju Hyun Park et al.

Summary: The study observed changes in the physical and chemical properties of hydrated calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) before carbonation through XRD and NMR analysis, revealing the important role of intercalated water in the carbonation reaction of Ca(OH)2. The hydrated Ca(OH)2 formed a stable structure with intercalated water molecules, leading to decreased reaction barrier and heat of reaction in the carbonation process. This study provides insight into the significance of water intercalation between the Ca(OH)2 interlayers in the carbonation reaction.
