Shu Cai et al.

Summary: The degradation of Triclosan (TCS) in soil and groundwater by Fe2+ activated persulfate (Fe2+/PS) oxidation process was studied in this research. The study found that TCS was readily degraded in soil by Fe2+/PS oxidation system, with various reactive substances involved in the degradation mechanism. The presence of certain ions in the solution may promote or inhibit the degradation process. Additionally, the Fe2+/PS oxidation process may impact the soil physicochemical properties and microbial community structure.

Phenanthrene decomposition in soil washing effluents using UVB activation of hydrogen peroxide and peroxydisulfate

Yufang Tao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the decomposition of phenanthrene in soil washing effluents using UVB light assisted activation of H2O2 and PDS oxidation processes. It was found that UVB/PDS process showed a promising alternative for SW effluent treatment with up to 85.0% PHE degradation efficiency under 6 h UVB irradiation. The impact of oxidant concentration, initial pH, and coexisting inorganic anions on PHE removal efficiency was evaluated.

Summary: Sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot- )-based advanced oxidation processes have gained significant attention for their high catalytic activity in treating water pollutants. The combination of iron-based materials with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or persulfate (PS) is an effective way to generate reactive sulfate radicals. The analysis of different heterogeneous iron-based catalysts for PMS or PS activation provides insights into their microstructure, electrical properties, and the effects of various engineering approaches on activation.

Xuehong Yuan et al.

Summary: The study found that nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) exhibits high efficiency and potential in activating persulfate (PS) to degrade TBBPA, and is conducive to the degradation reaction under certain conditions. Additionally, heavy metal ions such as Zn(II) and Ni(II) inhibit the degradation of TBBPA, while Cu(II) accelerates its degradation.

Soil organic matter protects US maize yields and lowers crop insurance payouts under drought

Daniel A. Kane et al.

Summary: Higher levels of soil organic matter are associated with greater yields, lower yield losses, and lower rates of crop insurance payouts under drought in the United States. The positive effects of soil organic matter on yield resilience are partially explained by its impact on available water capacity and cation exchange capacity, with potential additional mechanisms not fully captured by those metrics. Overall, soil organic matter predicts yield resilience at regional scales and should be considered in agricultural policy and financial planning.
