The fate and behavior mechanism of antibiotic resistance genes and microbial communities in anaerobic reactors treating oxytetracycline manufacturing wastewater

Hong-Ying Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, two parallel-operated EGSB reactors were used to investigate the behavior of antibiotics resistance genes and mobile genetic elements in different environments. Results showed that anaerobic treatment process cannot efficiently reduce ARGs and may increase the risk of ARGs proliferation through the suppression of antibiotics resistance bacteria.

Shock effects of monovalent cationic salts on seawater cultivated granular sludge

Raghavendran Sivasubramanian et al.

Summary: Transitioning seed sludge from seawater to industrial salt solutions resulted in granule disaggregation, poor settling, sludge washout, and development of fluffy or slimy flocs. The predominant reason for these changes was the alteration in exopolysaccharides composition after the shift to single salt media.

Wastewater treatment using oxygenic photogranule-based process has lower environmental impact than conventional activated sludge process

Doris Brockmann et al.

Summary: The Life Cycle Assessment was used to compare the environmental feasibility of a novel wastewater treatment technology with a traditional system, finding that factors such as artificial lighting, biomass fate, and nitrogen flows in the system contribute to the potential environmental impact. Optimization is needed to reduce the overall environmental impact, with the potential for an energy neutral treatment system with optimized lighting.

Characteristics and formation mechanism of hollow Anammox granular sludge in low-strength ammonia sewage treatment

Wenqiang Wang et al.

Summary: Hollow Anammox granular sludge is found to be effective in treating low-strength ammonia wastewater, with Candidatus Kuenenia as the dominant bacteria living within extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) shield. The formation of hollow granules involves cavitation and specific Anammox activity.EPS secretion is related to the specific Anammox activity and tryptophan or protein-like components are crucial in EPS formation within the granules.

Performance enhancement of a submerged forward osmotic membrane bioreactor by aerobic granules

Yuyin Wang et al.

Summary: Introduction of aerobic granules into FOMBRs can improve wastewater treatment efficiency, especially in the removal of ammonia-nitrogen. The results show that aerobic granule-based FOMBR achieved higher removal efficiency of ammonia-nitrogen compared to activated sludge-based FOMBR.

Characteristics of microbial community in EGSB system treating with oxytetracycline production wastewater

Hongying Chen et al.

Summary: The study showed that gradually increasing OTC concentration can enhance COD removal efficiency in the treatment of OTC production wastewater containing high concentrations of organic matter and antibiotic residues, while the dominant type of methanogen is not affected by OTC. Environmental factors and microbial communities are significantly influenced by OTC and VFAs in the treatment process.

Fast granulation of halophilic activated sludge treating low-strength organic saline wastewater via addition of divalent cations

You-Wei Cui et al.

Summary: Granulation of halophilic activated sludge with an average diameter of 910 +/- 10μm can be cultivated by adding divalent cations into the saline influent with low organic load. Ca2+ plays a major role in the granulation process and accumulates in the halophilic granular sludge. By enhancing the EPS network of protein and Ca2+, halophilic granular sludge is formed.

Temperature-effect on the performance of non-aerated microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process in municipal wastewater treatment

Bin Ji et al.

Summary: The study found that high temperatures favored organic removal, with most of the ammonia-N being removed through microbial assimilation by microalgae and bacteria, and high efficiency of phosphorus removal. The contributions of microalgal and bacterial assimilations towards COD, ammonia and P removal appeared to be temperature-dependent.

Microbial predation accelerates granulation and modulates microbial community composition

Siew Herng Chan et al.

Summary: The study found that predation by protozoa and bacteriophage positively correlated with the formation of aerobic granules. The increase in abundance of filamentous phages may promote the structural formation of granules, while the absence of protozoa after chemical treatment delayed the initiation of granules formation.

Engineered methanotrophic syntrophy in photogranule communities removes dissolved methane

Anissa Sukma Safitri et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the efficient removal of dissolved methane in wastewater through a ecologically engineered methanotrophic community hosted in oxygenic photogranules. The novel community achieved an average methane removal rate of 84.8% during stable reactor operation. This approach shows promise for post-treatment of anaerobic effluent.

Hydrodynamic granulation of oxygenic photogranules

Joseph G. Gikonyo et al.

Summary: The study found that OPGs can be granulated rapidly and on a large scale from activated sludge under hydrodynamic conditions. Granulation only occurs with certain combinations of different energy input magnitudes. This granulation scheme relies on the "goldilocks" interaction of selection pressures and has potential applications in wastewater treatment with other granules.
