Parametric study and optimization of microwave assisted biodiesel synthesis from Argemone Mexicana oil using response surface methodology

Milap G. Nayak et al.

Summary: By optimizing the operational parameters, it was found that the catalyst amount, temperature, time, and methanol to oil molar ratio significantly affect the microwave-assisted transesterification of Argemone oil. The predicted yield was very close to the actual yield, indicating that the Argemone oil methyl esters meet ASTM standards and have the potential to be an alternative to diesel fuel.

Effects of High Hydrostatic Pressure assisted degreasing on the technological properties of insect powders obtained from Acheta domesticus & Tenebrio molitor

Berkay Bolat et al.

Summary: This study focused on defatting two edible insect species using High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP) extraction at different temperatures and analyzed the impact on the functional properties of the insect powders. The results showed that temperature increase led to a decrease in protein solubility, but HHP was found to be effective for defatting and improving the functional properties of the powders for potential use as food additives.

The Influence of Drying Methods on the Chemical Composition and Body Color of Yellow Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.)

Letlhogonolo Selaledi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of different drying procedures on the chemical composition and body color of yellow mealworm larvae. Sun-dried mealworms showed changes in essential amino acids and color, while freeze and oven-dried mealworms had similar crude protein content. Despite color changes, sun-drying resulted in the same nutritional composition as freeze and oven drying, making them suitable for food and feed products.

Impact of Diets Including Agro-Industrial By-Products on the Fatty Acid and Sterol Profiles of Larvae Biomass from Ephestia kuehniella, Tenebrio molitor and Hermetia illucens

Fatma Boukid et al.

Summary: Insects are a potential source of lipids, with fatty acid compositions and sterols varying depending on diet composition and species. H. illucens has low cholesterol but high campesterol and beta-sitosterol levels, while T. molitor and E. kuehniella have high cholesterol and low campesterol contents. Rearing insects on agro-industrial by-products can be a sustainable strategy for the circular economy, providing valuable fat sources for humans and animals.
