Surface Interrogation of Electrodeposited MnOx and CaMnO3 Perovskites by Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy: Probing Active Sites and Kinetics for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Zhaoyu Jin et al.

Summary: Surface interrogation scanning electrochemical microscopy (SI-SECM) was used to investigate the manganese oxidation state in two electrodeposited manganese-based electrocatalysts, revealing differences in Mn-III and Mn-IV species quantities in MnOx and CaMnO3 under different potentials, as well as the presence of a Mn-V species during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Time-delay titration of Mn-V showed that MnOx exhibited two types of active sites with different OER reaction rates, while CaMnO3 only displayed one kinetic behavior with a faster reaction rate.

Combination of Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation with Selective Oxygenation of Organic Substrates using Manganese Borophosphates

Prashanth W. Menezes et al.

Summary: Efforts in developing artificial manganese-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction have been hindered by unsatisfactory catalytic performance and poor stability. However, a new class of materials, helical manganese borophosphates, has shown uniquely high catalytic activity and durability in alkaline media, achieving the highest efficiency reported to date. This is attributed to their unexpected surface transformation into an amorphous MnOx phase with birnessite-like short-range order and surface-stabilized Mn-III sites under extended electrical bias, as demonstrated by various spectroscopy methods.

Tip-Enhanced Electric Field: A New Mechanism Promoting Mass Transfer in Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, NiFe alloy nanocone arrays were used to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) rate and outperform state-of-the-art OER electrocatalysts. The high-curvature tips on the nanocones induce a local electric field that significantly increases the concentration of hydroxide ions near the active sites, promoting OER activity. This local field enhanced OER kinetics is suggested to be a generic effect applicable to other OER catalysts.

Prashanth W. Menezes et al.

Summary: In this study, intermetallic nickel germanide (NiGe) was identified as a superior Ni-based electro(pre)catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with enhanced catalytic activity and durability. Compared to other Ni-based intermetallic precatalysts under alkaline OER conditions, NiGe showed unexpected electroconversion into gamma-(NiOOH)-O-III with intercalated OH-/CO32- that served as a highly active structure.

Electrocatalytic arsenite oxidation using iron oxyhydroxide polymorphs (α-, β-, and γ-FeOOH) in aqueous bicarbonate solution

Byung Guk Kim et al.

Summary: FeOOH polymorphs, including alpha-, beta-, and gamma-FeOOH, have been synthesized and used for electrocatalytic As(III) oxidation into less toxic As(V) in aqueous bicarbonate solution. Among them, gamma-FeOOH exhibits significantly higher catalytic activity for As(III) oxidation compared to alpha and beta-FeOOH, attributed to large As(III) adsorption, fast charge transfer, and facile generation of hydroxyl radicals.

Hongyuan Yang et al.

Summary: A unique dual metal oxides lattice coupling strategy was proposed to fabricate NiO/CeO2 nanowires arrays, which exhibited excellent electrochemical performance as a precatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), showing low overpotential and impressive cycle durability. The atomic coupling of CeO2 was found to significantly promote the generation of oxygen vacancies, expedite the phase transformation of NiO, and effectively inhibit the aggregation of NiOOH nanodomains, optimizing the reaction free energy towards oxygen-containing intermediates.

Self-Supported Electrocatalysts for Practical Water Electrolysis

Hongyuan Yang et al.

Summary: Over the years, significant progress has been made in enhancing the efficiency of water splitting through the development of economic electrocatalysts with improved conductivity, active site accessibility, and intrinsic activity. However, the challenge remains to create earth-abundant catalysts that can meet the demands of practical water electrolysis. Self-supported electrocatalysts are considered the most suitable contenders for large-scale hydrogen generation due to their features like increased active species loading, rapid charge and mass transfer, strong affinity between catalytic components and substrates, easily controlled wettability, and enhanced bifunctional performance.
