Age and Sex Differences in the Associations of Pulse Pressure With White Matter and Subcortical Microstructure

Emilie T. Reas et al.

Summary: Midlife vascular disease increases the risk for dementia, with vascular dysfunction affecting brain health differently in men and women. Elevated pulse pressure is linked to cerebrovascular pathology and white matter damage, with associations between pulse pressure and neural integrity differing by sex and age. In this study, higher pulse pressure correlated with lower restricted isotropic diffusion in white matter, particularly in certain brain regions, with stronger effects in younger participants and in women. Monitoring microstructural changes using restriction spectrum imaging could indicate neuronal loss, demyelination, or inflammation associated with age-related cerebrovascular dysfunction.

Associations of Omega-3 fatty acids with brain morphology and volume in cognitively healthy older adults: A narrative review

Tony Macaron et al.

Summary: The association between omega-3 intake and brain volume, specifically the hippocampus, total grey matter, total brain volume, and white matter lesion volume, was observed in several studies. However, mixed findings were reported and the association appeared to be brain region-dependent. More research is needed to formulate specific recommendations for omega-3 intake to support brain health.

Mediterranean Diet, Alzheimer Disease Biomarkers, and Brain Atrophy in Old Age

Tommaso Ballarini et al.

Summary: The study found that adherence to a Mediterranean-like diet is associated with larger mediotemporal gray matter volume, better memory, and reduced amyloid and tau pathology. Mediotemporal volume mediated the relationship between diet and memory, and there was a favorable moderating effect on the associations among amyloid, tau pathology, and mediotemporal atrophy.

LPC-DHA/EPA-Enriched Diets Increase Brain DHA and Modulate Behavior in Mice That Express Human APOE4

Sarah B. Scheinman et al.

Summary: Research suggests that LPC-DHA/EPA-enriched krill oil can increase brain DHA and improve memory-related behavior in mice with the APOE4 gene. Therefore, long-term use of LT-krill oil supplements may provide some level of protection against age-related neurodegeneration.

Mediterranean Diet, Alzheimer Disease Biomarkers, and Brain Atrophy in Old Age

Summary: The study found a positive association between adherence to a Mediterranean-like diet and brain structure, cognitive function, and Alzheimer's disease-related biomarkers. Greater adherence to MeDi was linked to better memory, reduced AD pathology, and larger gray matter volume in the brain.
